I also like the hairdo and the hat offcourse

Does Bogart wear the same hat in all of his Bogart-hat films or does he has a different but similar hat every time? Or does he have the same make of hat bashed differently (since not two hand bashes will be perfectly identical)?

What do people think would be most likely? Because looking at the photos from The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca there are minor differences, but the dimensions seem to be the same.
I can see why one would think the Maltese Falcon hat was a C-crown

But check out these shots from The Maltese Falcon also:

Definitely a Diamond Bash....now check out the Casablanca hat:

I personally think they are the same hat or very similar...and I think Penman Hats nails it with their 'Casablanca' hat...check it out....

This would also work beatifully for the hat Dana Andrews wore in Laura and a half dozen other films...:

What do you think? I think it works for the Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, and Laura Hats...It would just be left to the appropriate hand bashing....

I don't think it's any specific name brand bash ... not a C or a diamond ... somewhere in between from an era when men bashed their hats without a name for the bash
... just pushing in the open crown to a point where it looks and feels good on his head

and the hat worn in Laura looks like more of the same ... more of a 6 point type bash there

and where Johns bash looks good ... it is far to "neat" and "on purpose" to be what was worn in the film

and it has a raw edge

And, so long as we're pickin' nits here, the felt in all the movie lids appears much thinner than the John P. The modern felt is clearly a thicker gauge material, less responsive to the quick, tight bashing seen on the older production models.

I agree...the Penman Casablanca seems to have a thicker felt....and this photo has the raw edge although you can get it with different edges...although Dana's edge looks like that cavanaugh edge....Glad I didn't say it look exactly the same....lol....Bob at Black Sheep is recreating the Cavanaugh Edge, he's the only guy I know who can pull that one off these days...

Ohh but I don't agree about the bash...these guys bash their hats a little different everytime they put it on....As I would do the same with that Penman or any other open crown hat, vintage or new....I do think These perticular movie hats were sporting a diamond type bash, but that doesn't mean much with hand bashed hats...that could be changed in an instant. I've changed mine while riding in the car or passing time...But in those films the bashes stayed the same and could gives either one of those cats a proud membership in our Diamond Authority if they wanted...}8^))
... As for Casablanca...Bogey's bash looks pretty "on purpose" to me....Guess thats a judgement call....

Narrh ... I don't believe that to be correct. To my knowledge no one can do a felted edge today. Not even Bob, who's work with reviving lost hatting virtues I respect very much.

I believe Gary White bought a surplus stock of hat bodies with felted edge from Borsalino. I don't know if he still has any left, though. That was probably the last unblocked bodies available with felted edge.

Bob may do a "blind-stitched" underwelt, pressed up to mimic a felted edge - as seen on hats of other brands like Lee, Resistol, etc. :)

Ole is right, no one is currently manufacturing a Cavanagh Edge, and Bob would have to be felting his own hoods to do that. The only way to correctly model the Maltese Falcon, Cassblanca, or Laura hats is to have a Cavanagh Edge. You can get close, but not screen accurate.

Doesn't Dobbs make hats with guild edges still? Although I'm sure not on hats that are even close to the correct proportions of those old ones...
