Motorcycle Jacket

Hi guys,

I'm new to the site and came here because it seems you know your jackets! I'm looking to buy my first ever leather jacket. The image in the link below shows what my preference would be, but I'm clueless as to where to find such a jacket or even what the style and cut is called (motorcycle jacket?). The style of the jacket is important, since it's the only leather jacket I have ever liked and it's not like most I see sold around (clear give away: notice the shoulders...no epaulets).

I'd appreciate if someone could direct me to the right place. Thanks!

The Monza by Lewis Leathers out of London, England is similar. If you are looking for the "patina" and wear, then you will have to go with a very used jacket or some fashionista type that pre-ages the jacket. Depends what you are looking for...the design or the "look" to include patina.

Lewis, Langlitz, Schott and a host of others make "motorcycle" jackets. The first thing you need to ask yourself is "Am I going to be riding a motorcycle?" If not, you don't need some of the thick leather and extra strong stitching. You could easily wear a "fashion" jacket in a similar style for less $$ and probably be more comfortable.

I'm not going to be riding a motorcycle right now, although I've been looking into old german bikes lately. A less functional version is fine, I'm more interested in the look.

@billyb: The worn look in the image is a big part of why I like it, but not the main one. The actual style is what I'm looking for.

Probably more than you want to spend, but very, very good jackets that are made to measure. Maybe try eBay for a used jacket in the same style? Lewis leathers still go for big money but you can often find old British jackets of this style for cheap - TT Leathers, Rivetts etc.

The recent discussion on Pegasus comes to mind as a maker of nice trim D pocket off centered half belts. Their D pocket had no belt or epaulets. Very trim and smart looking jacket.

Aether, I don't think that's the same as the Super Monza. The shoulders are definitely not the same and there's some differences in the stitching.

Yes, it's not the same, but the inspiration were the english "lancer" jacket with padded shoulders of the late 70s/early 80s.

Hi Mickyo, sorry for the confusion. Like Cuthbert has pointed out, I meant to say this was a jacket 'in the style of' a typical British biker jacket from the 70's/80's, of which Lewis were/are a major player. The main design features were: lancer front, mandarin collar, side adjuster buckles and padded shoulders and elbows. Normally cut very slim too. I love 'em.

Just go to eBay Motors and search for "distressed leather jacket". Not sure what your measurements are, but there are several Harley jackets that are similar to what you are looking for. You can troll eBay for a while to see if something pops up.

My issued motorcycle jacket is similar. Double breasted. Angled zipper. Zippered, tapered sleeves. No epaulettes. I've had mine for over 10 years now, and it still doesn't look as worn as the one in the picture. But I also oil and polish my leather on a regular basis. Three things you can do. Either buy a nice new jacket, break it in yourself, wear it for years, and earn the patina. Look for some fashion house that offers a vintage looking jacket. Or, try to find a used jacket online or in a thrift shop.

You may want to take a look at the Commander from Fox Creek Leather. Similar to what you're looking at but you will have to do the distressing.

I ordered one but sent it back do to sizing which was a little too small. I may still go ahead and try the next size up. Real nice jacket though.

I wouldn't go with a motorcycle jacket if you won't be riding one. The sleeves are longer, the waist is high, the leather is very very thick, the fit is tight. They are meant to be comfortable and fit while seated on a motorcycle not necessarily standing up. I have a nice horsehide riding jacket in a cafe style but I only wear it while riding, it's not a practical daily wear jacket.

I just checked out your Golden Bear MC........very nice indeed.
When I was an Army recruiter in South San Francisco (363 El Camino Real, Suite 110) I was friends with some SFPD and San Bruno motor officers and even back then the various Bay Area Police Depts. were getting their leather stuff predominately from both Golden Bear and Johnson Leathers in San Francisco. Actually when I was there, Johnson had just opened their doors.
Can't go wrong with either one! Your jacket looks great!
