Most versatile Aero jacket? What do you think?

Hi all, I'm looking to purchase a new jacket, and am likely going to order a custom Aero. I like many of their designs and leather choices, so I'm trying to pare down the number of choices. I'm trying to trim down my closet a bit, and selling off my old less expensive jackets to fund the purchase of one good 'does it all' jacket.

So with that in mind, what do you think is the most versatile model and leather from Aero? It can dress up or dress down, jeans or slacks, tee or tie, good in the field or on the town. What's your pick for the most versatile?

Please state the model, leather, and color! Thanks!

Awesome idea for a thread...

Sadly, I haven’t anything useful to add, but will be watching this thread closely for the leather jacket gurus on this forum to chime in with ideas!

Aero Highwayman, as far as I am concerned. Black or brown, it doesn't matter. If you get it right, no contest.

Stylewise I'll say Highwayman (or a belted Cheyenne if you are into longer styles).

Leather.. CLX looks nicest imho but if you wanna wear the jacket for formal events, you cannot go CLX because ita ages superfast and the worn-out look won't do well with a suit or a more formal and dressy look in general; so for a do-it-all I'd go with seal vicenca horsehide. Luckily I don't bother with a do-it-all, so I'll stick with CLX instead. :D

Brown CXL LHB for its design and functionality. I had it on last night with a sailor's shirt and jeans and today with shirt, tie, dark olive vest and tan cords. I'd love a HWM, though. And a Happy Days. Mariner.

Versatile in terms of social occasion? Or in terms of season/weather/purpose as "gear"?

The Highwayman, 50s Half-belt and Half-belt deluxe are probably the most commonly seen styles, and there's probably a reason for that.

The Rockafella, Dust Bowl, Plainsman, and Wayfarer are all worth a look for "something different". And around here we all love the Bootlegger. The Maxwell, Mulligan, Teamster, and 1920s Work Coat are great if you like a leather jacket with buttons.

The cafe racer is popular, even for non-riders. It's not overstated the way the J-106 is.

I realize that doesn't really narrow it down...

Highwayman in brown FQHH. Longer style would be a Stockman (if you're stuck in the middle, a Long Half Belt).

Sheene... or 30s halfbelt if you like vintage style. For me its gotta be cxl steer. If you want the most versatility: cordovan as it goes with both brown and black.
handymike took the words right out of my mouth with his post. I think a 30's halfbelt in cordovan can pretty much be worn anywhere, at least anywhere I'd want to go...
CXL steer or horse would be my first choice but if you want something lighter I'd consider the cordovan Vincenza horsehide as well.

I think they are all pretty darn versatile. Question is... do you have the sand to pull it off, regardless of the occasion? Maybe a j106 won't fit every situation but it very well could. I've tried to let go of the need to fit my clothing based on circumstance of time and place and focus more on my own sense of style and comfort. Probably to a fault and social faux pas. Perhaps as I've aged I simply don't care...I understand the question tho. It's certainly debatable!

The HWM, 30's HB, CR and, course, Bootlegger are my top 4. It has to be CXL. For amazing color depth and life long durability.

As Tony indicates, they are all pretty versatile, maybe a Bootlegger or a J106 would be exactly what you are looking for. I purchased first a black steer hide Cafe Racer, however had intended to buy a Cordovan Highwayman. This was when Carrie still had the Insurrection shop in Seattle where you could try on numbers of these jackets. I just found the Highwayman didn't work very well with my body shape/type.

Speaking of that, you would be wise to contact Insurrection and let Carrie help you through this process, she is great at helping folks meet the jacket of their dreams. Stronlgy recommended! :)

For style, the 30's Half Belt is very versatile. For leather, the Vicenza will retain it's good looks longer.

I feel that the shawl collared cossack is great with either a t shirt or tie, but other makers offer better ones than Aero IMHO. You did limit our choice to Aero.

Well, aero seems to get the most buzz and love on this forum... but if you have others in mind that you think are more versatile, throw them in to the discussion too; I don’t mind—might give me some ideas!

I have a brown CXL FQHH Aero Highwayman, Black CXL button up Aero Stuart (no longer offered ), a '30s Half Belt in antiqued steer, and a mottled brown CXL Bootlegger left in my Aero collection which once consisted of a half dozen Aero jackets. As stated in another thread, I wear my Bootlegger more than the others. It just fits my style and offers up many compliments as well. However, if I bought a new jacket or went down to one..it would be a 'battered tan' Bootlegger for sure..but I must resist....o_O
