Most Depressing movies you've seen?

I answered this thread on another board (I know blasphemy) but I'd value the answers from you folks as well. What movies depressed you no end after viewing. Are there some movies you KNEW were going to set you off that you've avoided for years.

Depressing:
1. "Winters Bone" - Poverty destroys.

2. "Precious - See above

3. "Boys Don't Cry" - Sigh this thread is depressing me more.

4. "Glory" - Even if they'd won the battle the war goes on and on...

5. "X" - For obvious reasons.

6. "Spartacus" - That war also goes on and on and on...

7. "Inside Job" - Now I'm really depressed.

8. "I Want to live!" - Early treatise on capital punishment.

9. "City of Hope" - The decline and selling of the American city.

10. "The Wire" - I can't even begin to tell you.

Avoided for fear of wanting to do violence:

1. "Missisippi Burning" - My father's family lived through it, why relive bad memories?

"Tokyo Story", Yasujiro Ozu director.

Old couple come from the country to visit their children in Tokyo. There's something incredibly sad about two old folks sitting crying on a sea wall - just before the old dame dies.

He did another one about baseball that my wife won't let me watch with her - Tokyo Story was so depressing that his films aren't allowed in the house. I forced her to come watch "The Flavour of Green Tea Over Rice" at BFI which at least had an uplifting ending after 2 hours of depression. [huh]

I don't watch depressing movies, at least on purpose, but two that stand out are "Reservoir Dogs" and "The World According to Garp". I had sad comedies in Garp's case.

Number one is Watership Down. My mother took me to see that when I was six, and OMG, they just kept dying. Nothing went right for those poor bunny wabbits! It was like being kicked in my round little 6 y/o tummy repeatedly. I left the theatre bereaved of every illusion I'd still managed to cling to up until that. I swear it was Watership Down that turned me into the cynic I am today.

Number two would be Braveheart. Depressing on so many levels; the message that violence breeds more violence and that's OK as long as you bellow "Freedom" when you kill people, the misrepresentation of the Middle Ages (not to mention the blatant disregard for basic historical facts) and also because I had to look at Mel Gibson for two hours. I actually felt really, really down for days after seeing it.

Big time, but what an absolutely brilliant and hauntingly beautiful film; utterly, depressingly tragic, but beautiful.

Also "Stalingrad". SO DEPRESSING. Probably one of the most depressing war movies I've ever seen. Also brilliantly executed.

The Big Parade (1925). Although it has a cheesy tacked-on happy ending, the whole rest of the film was depressing for the most part. I thought about that film for DAYS after I first watched it. Then I made my husband watch it. Years later he could not recall if it was silent or a talkie (because it was so good!)

I absolutely agree with you. I laughed the whole way through, then, when it was over, I had a rather depressing realization that, all things going how they are, the future depicted isn't exactly too far-fetched! Great film though. "It's got what plants crave!"

Badly made films depress me no end. Other than that, the only time I find a film depressing is when it's boring. And when a film bores me, I leave. Any film that is a "slice of life" picture I know will bore me, so I don't even bother with them. It's truly amazing how many crap movies one can avoid by asking the simple question: "Does it have a beginning, middle, and end-- preferably in that order?"
