The title of this thread is so poorly written, it makes parts of California cry.

Note that these were two distinct events: 2/19/38 for the Salesmen's Assn. and 3/17/38 for the Manufacturers' Assn.

Note also that among the makers listed for the latter clambake, there's only one name that's familiar even to us vintage hat aficionados: Adam. The old-line and national brands probably weren't part of the Mfrs.' Assn.

McLachlan (I thought it was MacLachlan) is heavily discussed here, Melton has at least a few mentions, Brittany has come up, and a few of the others are familiar as retailers.

Doran Brothers manufactured machines for the hat trade---such as sand bags etc. I have heard of them before as well.
Many of the other names there were not necessarily selling the end product hats but supplied equipment, materials and such. Makes sense as it is a manufacturer's association. That is an interesting association as there were several there that were likely competitors who sat down for dinner right next to each other. I would have liked to see them and hear the conversations. ;) :p

That's one of the principal benefits of trade association membership... It's one of the only places where you can avoid anti-trust scrutiny for rubbing shoulders with your competitors. OF COURSE, the lawyers have fouled even THAT up by reciting a standard disclosure that says: "Any conversation that strays into verbotten territory will be brought to an immediate close..."
