HJ, I've had better luck giving Akubras a spray with distilled water and shaping them than with steam. I guess it depends if it's a minor tweak or a major job of wrestling it into a shape. The BGCD was my favorite felt of all my Akubras.

agreed ... the felt of my BGG feels completely different than any of the others

I'm shaping a vintage ultra thin Borsalino in this video. Very easy to work with and shape. I did put in an order for a Camp Draft so I think I will show a video shaping a thicker more difficult hat for comparison when it arrives.
Thanks for the tip on Akubras. I'm going to just wear it for a couple of days to see if I can get it to conform to my head before I worry any more about the bash.

David, I watched your video a couple of years ago. Great video.

I would like to join the party. Please forgive my very rudimentary video skills. This was just too fun of an idea to pass up.

Thank you sir. This thread is just a great idea. I wish there had been more videos when I got into hats.

This could be a sticky.

I don't have an efficient method for applying steam to my hats so I've always used distilled water to shape my Akubras; so far it's worked out well for me. Considering the way Akubras seem to respond favorably to rain, I can't help but wonder if water might be the preferred method for shaping them?

So, the felt you felt felt different from the other felts you've felt? :D

I'm diggin' this thread, by the way. I wish I'd thought to look on You Tube before I shaped my first couple of hats, but it turns out the way I do it isn't too different from the way the professionals do it. I use distilled water instead of steam, and they clearly have far more experience, but otherwise our methods are nearly identical.

I'm with Perry... great to hear everyone as well as to see the hands at work. I don't know what I would have to add to the table. Maybe a little on listening to the hat before the bashing takes place. It might be long and you'd have to turn the sound up to hear the hat talking. Maybe a telescope crease?

I'd love to see and hear you apply any bash

to me it's all about seeing how someone else molds a hat ... and also hearing their voice
