Hi everyone
I have just come into possession of a monarch G1 flight jacket in need of a little restoration. It requires the usual cuffs and maybe the collar at a later date. The leather is quite thick —- much thicker than my l w foster. Anyhow I really love this jacket but one thing I have noticed that apart from the name tag having been removed I have noticed than on the right chest there is stitch holes where a very small patch once was . This is about 40mm by 40mm in size. It’s to small to have been a squadron patch so what do any of you members think it could have been . This might be a stupid question but I’m just curious.
I’ll post pics of the jacket soon.

Hey Splinter,

Love to see pics, but it’s a total toss up as to what could have been there. Could be a ship patch, aircraft patch, maybe even just a small diameter Navy or Marine insignia. The fact that it is round of course makes it harder. If it had been some odd shape, it might have given itself away.

Hi
thanks for your reply --- I feel that it may have been a stupid question but with so many knowledgeable folks on here i thought maybe , just maybe someone would know . ---- Its Basically been a square patch about 40mm by 40mm on the rh upper chest . I thought possibly a ranking or insignia ----would have posted an image but ive got the jacket boxed up for repairs now and i'd gave up on finding an answer lol.

Ha! Well no stupid questions... Plus, it’s always interesting to see a jacket that has something out of the ordinary. It kind of builds the knowledge base and all that.

I reconsidered the size of your patch and it occurs to me that it IS awful small. Now, I’m almost thinking it could have been as you say a rank insignia in leather, or even a backing for a badge or pin, like a chief's pin.

Especially back in the day, a lot of folks coveted the G-1 that were not traditionally pilots or aircrew. So, it could certainly be something other than a unit patch.

Pretty unique jacket you have there!
