Moe Penn

Anyone familiar with this vintage brand?

Moe Penn was the name of a chain of hat stores that existed in Brooklyn and Manhattan during the last 70 years. Most of their stores were in Brooklyn. The last one closed up on the lower East side 15 years ago .

I was outbid on a couple of nice Moe Penn fedoras when I first got the hat bug - I think RLK got one if not both of those.

Tonight I met a woman whose father owned the Moe Penn stores, many years ago, if not actually starting them. She is in her '70s, I think. We didn't talk much about it as we were leaving the gathering we were attending when I donned my hat. She said her father would love me. This started a brief conversation where she told me that her father owned three stores in Manhattan and Brooklyn by the name of Moe Penn. I'm going to have to find her to speak to her about it more.

I’m unfamiliar with Pen, but the size, style, and dimensions of both of these hats put them in the $30 range, maybe a bit more on a good day. The Mallory is common and nothing very special. As an avid watcher of the vintage hat market, I’d guess these hats will be slow movers and not go for much. You can buy their equivalents all day for a fraction of your list price. I don’t mean to be harsh, but there you have it.

If you have an offer for $125 you should jump on it. Your hats are low crown stingy brims probably made in the 1960s or later. Additionally, the smaller sizes (7 1/8 and smaller) don’t bring the money that larger hats do. I’ve bought over 250 hats in the last two years, and $125 is way over market value.

Here’s an example of what most of us would consider to be a better hat and it was $20. $125 is crazy money for the type of hats you’re selling.
