Thirty-one years ago on this day, July 30, 1975, former Teamsters Union President James Riddle (Jimmy) Hoffa, went to the Machus Red Fox Restaurant in suburban Detroit, MI to allegedly meet with reputed Mafia figures in an attempt to regain the Presidency of the Teamsters Union. The men he was supposed to meet were not at the restaurant. He called his wife from a payphone at the restaurant, telling her that no one showed up. That was the last time anyone has ever heard from him again. His Pontiac Grand Ville was found in the restaurants parking lot. Jimmy Hoffa has never been found.

Not A Mystery Per Se, Though The Details Are Open To Speculation.

William Roemer, the retired FBI expert on organized crime, said of Hoffa's disappearance," Accardo could tell you what happened to Jimmy Hoffa".
There's little question, in law enforcement circles, that Anthony"Joe Batters" Accardo played a major role in Hoffa's disappearance, since he owned Hoffa and controlled the Teamsters. Suffice to say, nobody would touch Accardo's property without permission and Hoffa, but more importantly the Teamster's Central States Pension Fund(a multi-billion dollar piggy bank) belonged to Accardo.

There is speculation that Hoffa had the support of Sam Giancana(Accardo's protege, who ran the Chicago Outfit's day-to-day operations) in his quest to regain control of the Teamsters. This may have run contrary to Accardo's wishes, for Giancana was murdered a month before Hoffa's disappearance. Again, you don't kill Giancana without asking for Accardo's permission.

Allen Dorfman, who Accardo installed to run the pension fund, was murdered a decade later, after his federal indictment was announced. Again, you don't kill Dorfman without.........................

As an aside, Accardo was given his nickname(Joe Batters) by Al Capone, for whom he served as a bodyguard. The famous baseball bat scene, depicted in the Capone movies, was actually the handiwork of Accardo.

But, where is the body? That's the big mystery. The guy disappeared off the face of the earth. This latest escapade where the FBI dug up that farm in Michigan is just another incident that the Feds still don't know where the body was disposed.[huh]

While I too would like to know the location of JH's human remains, I'd be more interested in knowing the sequence of events that led to his demise. Some have speculated that Joey "The Clown" Lombardo knows the whole story and since he is currently in federal custody there may be some information forthcoming. The Michigan dig may have the Clowns fingerprints on it as I'm sure that JH is a topic of conversation.

Obviously, Hoffa got into a car with someone he knew. He would have fought someone out in the parking lot if someone just pulled a gun on him. So, it had to been someone that was familiar with him and whom he trusted. Once in the car; who knows what happened?[huh] Anything goes.

I don't see why the question of his body's location should be so outstanding. If the man was truly a mob victim, there are endless possibilities. It could be tied to a weight at the bottom of Lake Michigan for all we know.

At the end, Hoffa had no friends as he was to told to stay away from the Teamsters, first by the Justice Department and then by Accardo. Yet, he persevered. He had to have known what lay in wait for him. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place.

Did he have any friends before he went to prison? I doubt that. Really, the only freind he had was his wife Josephine. If he was suckered into thinking he could have made a play for the presidency, although Nixon's release was he had to wait until 1980, he still must have had some people whom he considered "good" acquantences.

Although his is obviously dead and gone, the big question is; "who exactly did it? how did they do it? and what was the sequence of events after 2:00 p.m. at the Machus Red Fox in Bloomfield Hills?

We do live in a country where the "Produce the Body" attitude is prevelant. It helps us understand what happened , which is nearly as important as WHY it happened.

Elaborate murder schemes have been exposed because the evidence the body turns up unexpectedly. It will help cap off a long term question of: What ever happened to Jimmy Hoffa?
