Modern Ad Design

Seems Stella Artois knows its roots. this from this week's Time Out, though i've also seen it in a tube station (may have been Euston northbound Northern Line)

Nice! If only they knew how to brew beer like the Czech or the British.

Isn't that the truth but I suppose at least it's better than Heineken :p

Ooh it's dreadful stuff BK!

If it's lager or pils I'm after you can't go past the Czech brews.

I think we're going to have to start a beer thread... ;)

Like the ad BK, have you seen their TV ad with the WWI pilot? Brilliant!

I started another beer thread, give some of the newbies a chance to name their faves.

When I was still out in Colchester I saw a few Stella Artois billboards. They stood out to me because of their bold old time design. Although the design is reflective of an older style, it appears a lot fresher next to most of today's billboards. I really like the dark colors.

That's a beauty. It's good to see that appealing ad design is still being practiced. I just know that if I ever turn in something like that to my ultra-hip profs, I'd get a good kick in the shins!

I'd agree with you BK that a great many ads of the 20s/30s periods were nicely executed.

However your Stella ad is, apart from stylistic elements, very much like many other print ads from the last 20 or so years. The shortage of body copy, the heading which rather than selling the product sells the status of the product. (I used to be in advertising and although was a media buyer, I also did some copywriting)

But there is something about 20s/30s Art Deco print imagery which conveys such a strong image, perhaps there is our connotation of propaganda with such imagery. Illustration also seems to convey stronger messages now, maybe due to the fact we as an audience, have been so desensitised by photographic images - have a look at the number of print ads which use illustration now.

I'm enjoying seeing a the burgeoning reappearance of illustration in ads and the more 20s/30s inspired ads that pop up the better!

EDIT: Just found the Stella WWI ad that I was talking about. From about 3 years ago now but a simply wonderful TVC...
