Mister Freedom: Campus in the Raw

I treated myself to a jacket in raw hide. The smell, escaping immediately out of the box, is incredible. A pleasant surprise is that it was packed in a selvedge jean bag.

Not a bad stitch or seam that I could find.

I don’t have a mannequin to drape the Campus for suntanning, but the most eloquent solution is usually the simplest: roll a clean towel over the back of a patio chair, and drape the jacket over it. Set a timer and let the tanning begin.

Perfecto!
Powerband, the jacket fits you just spot-on. Very well.
Btw, what boots are you wearing on the photos above? They are really cool ones. Superb boots. Absolutely.

Thanks—the boots are Whites Boots.

This seems to be one of the more difficult to jackets to pull off but I think it looks great on you!

I can see why this jacket would be a challenging fit for many. It’s short in length and not form fitting... but those are the reasons I like it. And, like a new puppy, it requires a bit of maintenance, but mostly up front until it acquires that lovely patina.

Nice cut, although I’m not a fan of raw/natural hides.

I’m happy the cut fits me, but then I’ve never been disappointed if I pay attention to the specs. I also used to shy from natural hides because I had it in my mind I’d be wearing a cow’s utter.

Already got my first blemish when, without thinking, I tried to gently wipe a small spot with a damp cloth. Glad I stopped—would have been a steadily growing hot mess. Oh well, just a spot of accelerated tanning. I have to overcome every little bruise and start treating it the way a college student abuses his liver.

Flipped for UVA on the other side. I like to think it’s already turning darker after 90 minutes of sunbathing, but it’s probably my wishful imagination. Anyway, I’m in the shade reading a book on a nice sunny afternoon. Where’s my lemonade?

Hey Powerband:
I’m really glad you decided to start this thread from cradle to grave on this stellar example. You hang with this one and your kids will have a treasure, “sine pari” some decade from now.
Total class from box to bag to Powerband.
Unlined is going to drape like none other.
I look forward to “The Haul in the Raw” of this one.
Beyond cool!!

These are unadjusted photos, with 2 1/2 hours of sunbathing between. Is there a slight tanning effect already???

The only change is in the lateral direction of the sun, not its height in the sky.

It’s got to be my distorted hope under anticipation.

Difficult to tell, but it looks great already - fit and colour - so I'd just get on with wearing and enjoying it.

Hard to tell for sure, but here’s a little evidence: a farmer’s tan along the fold.

And, yes, Sloan, you’re right—I should just start wearing it. But it’s getting a little warm out in this mofo, so I’m going to keep sipping my spiked lemonade and watch the color change and the grass grow.

Powerband, if you possibly a bit worried about jacket's more smooth tanning process under the sun outside - just use a modest amount of natural oiled beewax (like Obenauf's for ex.).
Of course, on the front side of the jacket's leather only. Inner side of this unlined leather should be being kept clean and clear from anything.
There's no need to coat the leather of the jacket too generously or too often, you might use that just sometimes, from time to time, esp. after hard sunbathing (just to prevent jacket's leather being overdried).
The main phrases above are "a modest amount" and "not too often".
I suppose that the most important skill when you're wearing any raw natural leather jacket (like this beauty above) - is to keep calm and to be patient, there's no need to stare at every single spot and - of course! - no need to try to wipe off every single spot or any small casual natural stain from the jacket.
This jacket looks as virgin canvas now, which is going to get a lot of small spots, marks and something frome time to time. During natural time flow the jacket will transform from "virgin canvas" looking to a gorgeous beautiful masterpiece with a lot of character. It's going to be the older the better.
Just wear the jacket with a lot of fun and with a big love to it, this beauty is definitely deserves that!

This jacket is so beautiful! Been eyeing it for a good while myself. It looks really good on you as well, congratulations!

And it’s hard to judge from pictures, but I think you’re right about you already seeing results from the sun tanning. I’ve made quite a lot of stuff from natural naked cow leather and the stuff I’ve used tends to tan really quick, you’ll see significant darkening after only a couple hours in the sun.
