The1970s were a bad time stylewise, for almost everything except really big cars. Clothing was uniformly awful, and interior decorating was even worse. Then there were the vans with painted sunsets on them. And disco.

The weird take on western wear was consistent with other 70s "innovations." It was definitely a polyester era at odds with our ideas of "classic."

King appears to be the precursor to the Open Road, Kingston, Kingsway, Kingslower. Dress hat with a western shape, crown height and brim dimensions similar to Open Road, Stratoliner.
