Neither. I was talking to my Mother on the phone in my office in the basement. When we finished, I looked at my watch and it was 4:45 PM. I thought there would be sufficient ambient light from the 3 windows in the basement for me to navigate the length of the basement to the stairs. Wrong. It had been raining with dark cloud cover, and it was pitch black. I made it to the stairs and then my right foot went into the spokes of a road bike I had set up on an indoor trainer. We all went down with the bike and trainer coming down on top of me. Got a nice fracture of the fibula at the ankle. Was this a sports or hiking injury?
My wife wanted to take me to the ER, but I said, "No, I'll wait until my appointment with my doc 2 days from now. Combat helicopter pilots are tough. They don't go to the ER with a broken leg when there is an alternative." She just rolled her eyes. Of course then I didn't know it was broken, but highly suspected it was.
So, there began my life of inactivity for the next several months and the gain of about 30 pounds. I went from 185, and in shape, to about 215 and out of shape.
