Military 'woolly pully' sweaters

Yep, first army jumper. Don’t want to stray into army cosplay territory but it’s a classic jumper that I think should go nicely with raw denim and Red Wings.

I’m something of an aficionado as I have been wearing them since I was a schoolboy in the 1970s.

Hahah. My first was issued to me when I joined the school cadet Corp in 1985. Pure polyester bag of shapeless green. With sleeves so long I had to triple roll them.

Finally got a decent wool one when I joined the reserves five years later.

My first was when I was 11 and it was 100% wool. I joined the school cadet corps three years later and wore one with the school crest! In my spare time I wore my own and I also had the Navy and RAF versions. I have continued to wear them since. I enjoyed the cadet corps at school
and its equivalent at university.

The country where I was born and lived six years! ... You obviously went to a school on the British model.

The Australian Army called the Woolly Pully a ‘Howard Green’ I think. Years ago I had an Aus. WP with camo patches.

Corps at school was always on Wednesday afternoons with occasional weekends away.

I went to a private Anglican school that felt very English at the time.

Yes! When I was in the army in the early 1990s, we transitioned from greens to DPCU camo. For a few years we had a nice wool jumper in a dark tan with dpcu cotton epaulets and shoulder-elbow patches. I may still have one somewhere. I’d guess they were only issued for a couple of years before being replaced by a fleece jacket.

That does sound exactly like the school I went to. There was a strong emphasis on sport, especially Rugby which was always referred to as Rugger.
The Aus. jumper I had (as part of my collection!) was, as you say, dark tan rather than olive green like the standard Woolly Pully. It wore out (or I grew out of it) quite a few years ago. I wouldn’t mind another one sometime although I already have an embarrassingly large number of military sweaters!

Yes, in my opinion 100% wool is much better, far superior to made made fibres, acrylic, polyester, cotton for Sweaters, WPs etc. I don't really like fleeces either.

(I happen to be wearing a Navy WP at the moment.)

... And I am wearing a Black WP (as used Royal Tank Regiment) at the moment. I won’t be wearing it much longer as it’s going to be warmer later this morning.

It’s probably already been said, but just in case: for US buyers, don’t order directly from OK in the UK. They also list on Amazon under their parent company TW Kempton. Fifty dollars delivered in two days.

Was that how you bought your Sub sweater? Mine, also made by OK/TW Kempton, was bought many years ago in Silverman's Army Surplus, East London.

I ordered mine from the UK, failing to realise that TWK and OK were the same brand. With shipping and the higher price, I paid close to double what I could have - and yet I still consider it a bargain!

After taking another look at their Amazon store, I may have to buy a WP now - I like some of the colours they offer - nothing garish, but definitely not service issue.

However many of the sizes are already sold out. The submariner is also priced much higher on Amazon .

The Dark Grey Mix is a good colour and one I often wear. Highly recommended - really a bit more of a ‘steel grey’ colour than its name suggests.

There is a plum in my size on Amazon (which has indeed been picked-over, since the last time I looked). I also liked the tweedy brown they had as well as the Norwegian shawl collar - both sold out here, now.

Too bad they don’t do kids sizes. I bet my kids would wear them in winter.
