Doing some research today, trying to figure out what exactly happened to General Jose de la Luz Blanco during the early years of the Mexican Revolution. Guess that isn't a primary concern to most of you!

Came across this famous and wonderful picture taken in Juarez in May of 1911. It is an astonishing picture because virtually every major figure of the next ten years of the history of the revolution is standing or seated together at this one place. There are future Mexican presidents, vice presidents, governors and of course, the most famous of all, Pancho Villa. It is also interesting because of the plethora of hats. Check out all the styles and the bashes. Isn't the variety of hats terrific? I like them all. My General Blanco is the big guy to the right of the doorway.

Here is also a picture of him a year or so later....is that an Open Road? Looks pretty stylish to me.....OK...back to the research....he was reported killed by Federal troops in 1913, yet shows up in a New York Times article in 1914 leading a force of 14,000 troops in Jalisco.......Hmmmm....I know you don't care.....oh well, they are great hats, aren't they?

My personal favorite is the hat on #7 Jose Pino Suarez

It reminds me of one of the hats worn by the guy in the Shanghai Kid movie. Not sure what it is called....kind of a narrow brimmed western. In case anyone is interested, he (#7) became vice president of Mexico under Francisco Madero (#1) and was assassinated along with Madero in early 1913, less than two years after this picture. Number 8 with the bowler was his main rival for the vice-presidency. Number 15 was the grandson of the great Italian fighter Garibaldi. Wonder if he was wearing a Borsalino? Number 18 ended up hating number 10, while numbers 1 and 5 became presidents of Mexico, but that is probably more than you want to know....

Great stuff, sure would like to see more of this kind of thing on the lounge, although it is, strictly speaking, outside the purview of the GE, I guess. Been through almost all of the 500 plus pages of Shorpy.com, a great resource for those of us who want to SEE what it was really like back in the day. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find a similar site that has the 19th and early 20th century material and photographic culture of the Far West as its focus. So, if the mods will allow it, more please!

Yes, I'm also always interested in seeing old "historical" photo's, especially when they are good quality, which is, alas, ...more difficult. I also sometimes roam through the website "Shorpy"; they specialize in very high quality photographs of times past.

When I was at Chapultepec castle last year, visiting the Mexican history museum, I bought a book, also to practice my Spanish, bridging the history of that Nation from Moctezuma to Fox.
Seems any politician (whether civil or military) had a set of three end-of-career options:
(1) Get re-elected
(2) Get shot
(3) Go into exile
Don Portolan, -with all respect- (and I say this gently) ... do not assume automatically that there is "no" interest in the history of Mexico...
