Figures, leave it to a German hat company to go to the trouble and expense of doing that! Germans are known for being quality fanatics! :eusa_clap

I would think that Mayser had taken the trouble to get ISO 9001 certified because of their involvement in the automotive and other industrial markets, where it is pretty much a prerequisite.

I was suprised at how diverse a business Mayser is.

(RE: Maysers. Vintage Maysers are always spot on, in my experience. 58 means 58 and they fit me absolutely perfectly. But this summer I tried on a new Mayser panama size 58 and it was so small that, if I hadn't known the size, I would have guessed it was a large 56 or small 57.)

I have a couple of modern Mayser Panamas and the sizing is ok although these were made in Germany. All production moved to Slovakia in July of 2011 but I believe they also moved the machinery. Mayser have cost reduced (and reduced their product line) on the material side over the years but they seem more precise compared to other modern manufactures.

I completely agree as I was thinking the same thing when I went to the companies web site and saw how many different industrial businesses they are in. I have worked for major electronics, industrial and tech companies and it was also common for different divisions to leverage the work from other parts of the company to do this sort of thing. That is since much of the expertise and infrastructure was in place applying it to other areas was far less expensive or hard to do than it would be to do it from the ground up.

Mayser is yet another large company with a very diverse set of businesses and I would guess they might not have gone to the trouble had it not been the other kinds of business. Though perhaps if they are making clothing for government agencies there might be a requirement. For example, if they make uniform hats for the German military the certification might be a requirement.

I completely agree with those assessments that there are two many variables such as human head size and shape variability, material characteristics, environmental (humidity, temperature, etc) and numerous other potential factors that guaranteeing sizing and proper fit in a mass produced product in this sort of application is impossible.

Even with a custom hat or should you be lucky and find the perfect fit for you in a mass produced product there is the reality that the hat can change size over time or your head could change, for example weight gain or loss or hair falling out (my personal problem). It just means we will all have to try on lots of hats and buy more in the future! ;)
