Mensusa.com for suits ... what's the skinny?

I hate - hate - stuff like that. Just reading about it has got me all angry for the day. As you said, FG, why have a shopfront at all if people aren't allowed to look? One of the greatest weaknesses of online clothes shopping is not being about to look at and touch the fabrics, or try things on for fit. An online store with a real shopfront can overcome this weakness with anybody who cares to visit them. MensUSA, or any other online vendor with a shop front also, should have managed to turn this weakness into a strength, but instead they have actually managed to use their shopfront to weaken their business. Ridiculous.

Sounds to me like you should go down there, tell them you DO wish to buy a suit that day, take up all their time looking through every suit in every fabric, and then just walk out.

"...I'm not running a museum."

That's a shame, because the staff in museums tend to have manners.

Good Lord...how on earth do people like this manage to stay in business? I don't get it. The guy actually poses as a customer, has the screenname 'mdade', and tells people to talk to 'Michael Dade' in order to get good service...is he really THAT dumb to think that people won't notice?

I suppose Mr. Dade is milking the 'sucker born every minute' end of the customer spectrum and not caring about repeat business.

If it weren't for the web, he'd actually have to clean up his act.

I went over to this store and wanted to look at the suits. The suits were hanging there, in the store just waiting to be perused. I was told by the store manager, that unless I was going to buy something that day that I could not look at the suits. I was told by the manager that "Unless you're going to buy, I'm not going to show you any suits." I told him that I needed to look at the suits to buy a suit and he refused saying, "You can buy online, I'm not running a museum."
This man is a poor, poor excuse for a retailer. He's either defensive about the quality of his merchandise or too prideful to help anyone comparison-shop. He'd clearly rather lose a sale than let the prospect check out the goods close-up. And he deserves to lose every sale that costs him.

Is the gent perhaps a recent immigrant from a place where adversarial selling technique is the norm? If so, he ought to consider going back there. I wonder where such a place exists, and how.

Another possibility - whenever you encounter nasty sales or anti-sales talk - is that the operation is a front for illicit activity and really doesn't want customers. Especially not repeat customers.

You might be surprised how common this type of anti-salesmanship is.

Where it gets exquisite is when the salesman himself tries to exercise a clueless form of damage control and goes online to bluster defensively or (in this case) pose as his own shill. Invariably, the result is he digs an even deeper hole for himself.

Part of the problem may be that people like this can't understand the ethos of the web. They probably watch a few TV magazine segments and figure that it's just a Wild West of anonymity where anything goes. Then, when it turns out that word actually does get around, they panic...

Area man breathes new life into old thread in suit/museum confusion.

This is hilarious - in a bad way... but still hilarious.

Reminds me of the variety store I frequented as an eight year old, where, when I dared to look between the covers of the latest Spiderman or Kamandi or what not, I was sternly reminded that "this isn't a library."

first, I suspect the may be a tad prejudiced.

Second, if you read the website it reads JUST like the Brooklyn camera stores that are scams.

must order online, then THEY contact you [to add to your order "what do you mean you don't want 3 shirts 3 ties and underwear"] then they won't have the one you really want.

the more I read the farther I want to get from them:(

The Style Forum thread is hilarious except for the snottiness level (correcting other people's grammar? Geez) and the twit who doubts the very existence of Jon (FedoraGent). What a ninny.

I feel slightly defensive for having bought 2 suits from these folks; but I like these two suits. And what I like, I like, and that's all I can say. However, I don't think I'll buy from them again after reading of their BBB profile.

Yes, he is. These societies presently exist in many parts of the globe; as to how they exist, it must be in niches where better businesses do not compete with them (or have been chased out by men with sticks and their nephews).

Delighted someone else remembers Kamandi, Last Boy On Earth. Jack Kirby. Classic.

They have a penchant for that, though there are exceptions.

It was great, but it was no Omac: One Man Army. Wow.

:eek:fftopic: One Man Army CORPS. He even had a Mohawk (as I did too in 1986). That was phat. Phatty-bom-batty. However, if we are going to talk weird Jack Kirby non-superhero sci fi titles, let us not forget his CAPTAIN VICTORY for Pacific Comics in the early to mid 1980s. There was a tiger man! And a Goozlebobber. Or was that CV? Maybe it was OMAC or KAMANDI.

I did love Brother Eye in OMAC, though. Anyone have any old copies they can color photocopy for me?

I hope y'all realize that KAMANDI, in its main themes, was a direct rip-off (but oh so good) of PLANET OF THE APES. But KAMANDI inspired the Kirby TV cartoon THUNDARR, which rocked. Ookla the Mok. Princess Ariel. :eek:fftopic:

They are fraudelent...

Just look at their BBB report online:
Rating is an "F"
http://www.labbb.org/BBBWeb/Forms/Business/CompanyReportPage_Expository.aspx?CompanyID=100017241

They have a Photoshopped one on their own website with an "A" rating!

They also own these sites since they keep ripping people off - they just keep opening up new sites:
Mensusa.com
Suitusa.com
Mensitaly.com
Ahfashion.com
Suitaly.com
Italsuit.com

Here's the best part:
Mensusa.com - registered in Iran running business out of Los Angeles
Suitusa.com "
Mensitaly.com "
Registered at:
4333 South Karaj Avenue
#4 Karaj, Karaj 87753 Iran
19217535602

It looks like all of their photos are stolen or scanned from catalogs. You can see JOSABANK.com photos, Bachrach.com photos and Overstock.com photos.
There is a complaint about them taking someone's photos in their BBB review.

Not sure why the state of California hasn't shut them down since it doesn't even look like they have a business license.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but just thought I'd share that they're still up and kicking nearly three years later, and apparently have gotten even skeevier in their dealings, if the evidence here is mensusa.com at their worst in 2007.

I stumbled across the site accidentally looking for a fur felt bowler; they claim to have one here, with sketchy details. The link to the page describes the hat as wool felt but the page itself says fur. Note this part of the ad:

Leather Sweatband, Red Custom Christys' Satin Lining

This, combined with the assertion that $49 was a "half off sale," piqued my interest; I could very well have stumbled across a retailer having a half off sale on a Christys' derby. Wanting to be sure, I telephoned the 1-888 number yesterday. After about fifteen rings, it was answered by a guy who sounded like he was on a cordless phone from the 90s; it had that grainy, "wind tunnel" sound that you do not associate with the phone lines installed by a professional business. He had a mumbly, inarticulate voice and an accent that didn't sound like any kind of genuine accent but rather like someone badly imitating an accent. He said, "Mensusa dot com." I'm used to some kind of "How can I help you?" or "Please hold" or some kind of management-enforced tagline ("Where customer service is our priority!") so I was waiting for that and there was a dead silence while I realized he was waiting for me to say something. Finally I said that I was calling asking for information about one of their products.

Salesman: You want it, you buy it online.

Me: Well, I just wanted some information on it before I buy it.

Salesman: You want it, you buy it.

Me: I don't want to buy something without knowing anything about it.

Salesman: Everything you need to know's on the webpage.

Me: Um, well can I just tell you what item it is I'm asking about?

Salesman: Yeah, go on.

Me: SKU#FG3.

Salesman: (Pause) Yeah, the hat.

Me: Can you tell me who makes it?

Salesman: We do, all of our products are made by us, mensusa.

Me: But on the page it says Christys' lining, so I was wond--

Salesman: We make all our products, you want it you buy it online.

And he hangs up on me. So I call back, and get the same fellow, with the same wind tunnel effect.

Salesman: I told you, you want it you buy it online.

Me: I just want to know about the hat, it says Christys on the page, you're telling me you make it.

Salesman: Hey, we don't want your business.

Me: ...what?

Salesman: We don't want your business, have a good day.

And he hangs up on me. At this point I know that they're not on the level, so now it's become about me being ticked as opposed to me trying to get factual information. I call a third time.

Salesman: I told you we don't want your business.

Me: Why not?

Salesman: We don't need it.

Me: I could spend lots of money at your store.

Salesman: We don't want your money.

Me: Why not?

Salesman: We have enough.

Me: Then why are you still running a business? If you have enough money you don't need to have a store to sell things in to make more money.

Me: We don't want your business.

And another hangup. I waited a little bit, called again, and this time actually got a clear-sounding phone line with a guy speaking in unaccented, mid-western American English. He put me on hold, and I got disconnected. I called two more times; the next time, the same unaccented guy, on hold again. The third time, unaccented guy, who mistook me for someone else he'd had on hold; but while I had him on the line I cajoled him into answering my question.

Me: SKU#FG3, it says "Christys lining" but the other guy said you make all of your stuff yourselves.

(Dead silence on the other end. I decide to try something)

Me: Do you just use Christys' lining and the other materials are you own?

Unaccented Guy (Real fast): Yeah, yeah, we just use Christy's lining, and all of the other materials are our own.

Verbatim what I'd just said, in a very "Yes, that's right!" pseudo-reassuring manner.

So, they've branched out into false advertising now. I just thought that, if anyone still had any illusions or considerations about taking a shot... DON'T. They clearly not only lack customer service skills, they're outright crooks.

Brutal. Well, I feel that I pulled one over on THEM by getting two good suits for cheap. And that's the end of my dealings with these creeps.
