Just found an almost identical one on Ebay UK to my Society finding in reds, the seller dates it as 1930's ?
I've machine washed on a cold woolens wash and it hasn't shrunk and has come clean.

where do you gents like to buy your cotton nightshirts?

because of my small build, i have to wear size "s". vermont country store only goes down to "m".
brooks brothers does stock them in my size, but in recent years most of bb's offerings are made from treated, wrinkle-free cotton. while i admire the wrinkle-free treatment for my dress shirts (which, in any case, are worn over an undershirt), i do not like the how the treated cotton feels directly on my skin, especially when pressed down, between the sheets.
ll bean nightshirts are flannel, which is fine only in winter.
many years ago, i went to a tailor in jaipur who makes plain cotton kameez and asked him to modify some into nightshirts for me. i still wear them all summer, but they are getting quite worn.

First post. This thread got my attention since I love classic pajamas. I find it hard to sleep in PJ's so I sleep naked, most of the time, but when during the cooler winter weather I will lounge around the house in my pajamas for as long as I can.


Wearing a pair of Daniel Cremieux pajamas from Dillard's with a waffle weave robe from Nordstrom.

Of course I would need to live in an area that would warrant wearing such a robe, even in winter.

I recently finished washing, and repairing this beautiful dark red (maroon/burgundy) crosshatch cotton-wool (30/70) vintage dressing gown. It's currently drying on my heated towel-rack...

The company that made it is still in business, and dates from the early 1930s or late 20s. I'm not sure how old the gown itself is, though. I don't suppose the piping and the details on the collar, cuffs and pocket-hems give any clues?

I can't wait to wear it!!

Do any of you Gents out there like to wear pajamas and robes from the 30's and 40's etc?

I have a good collection of vintage robes and pj's from the 30's 40's and 50's, and love the whole pajamas with robe look. I know it steers away from the suit and fedora look, but when you see men in old movies dressed in pj's and robes they look fantastic. I have some old vintage PJ and Robe patterns and have had a pair made by a family friend but she didn't do them too well. I recently bought a pattern off ebay for some lounging pj's from the 30's, one a russian cossack style and the other a regular coat cut style. Both have belts which is typical of the 30s and 40s styles. Also love the pajama tops that button to the neck with the button hidden under the collar. It gives a nice dressed up look with a robe over the top. You see this look a lot in vintage pattern covers. I will try to provide some examples so that you can see what I mean. To me it is a very classy vintage look.

Some movies that come to mind include Cary Grant in Mr Blandings Builds His Dream Home, Spencer Tracy wore them a lot in his movies and I think they look great. Of course they all look freshly pressed when climbing out of bed which is one of those Hollywood things. I have never had a pair of pj's that aren't badly wrinkled when I wake up in the morning, but put a robe over them and they look great!

I also love the look of a robe instead of a suit coat when a man came home after work. You could still see his vest and tie and i think it is a great look and very comfortable

Is there anyone that makes decent flannel pajama sets today? I know LL Bean used to, but it looks like quality has declined from whatever place they source it from. There's Vermont Flannel, but stating their garments are "roomy" is an understatement (I was swimming in an XS).

I picked up this State-O-Maine dressing gown yesterday.

No real idea how old it is, but it feels sort of 60s to me. All polyester I'm fairly sure and fully lined with the same heavy satin as the facings. The sleeve heads are roped and there is an interlining or canvas through the chest area. It all adds up to be very heavy.

Thanks Mark. It is exactly the cut I was looking for. Would be nice to turn one up in wool or silk, but this will do for now. I see State-O-Maine has been in the robe business for a long time.
