..or so sayeth The Times.
With slight deviations to reflect taste, the specs of the contemporary man’s suit are as follows: a two-button closure; narrow lapels in a high-notch or peak style; high armholes; narrowly set and thinly padded shoulders; low-waist, slim-cut pants with hems that never quite touch the top of the shoes, daring to bare (just as women first did a century ago) a bit of sock or skin.

For the full article

As daunting as the new silhouette may be to middle of the roaders, most men will want to upgrade their softwear or risk being left behind. Many will have to look in their closets and decide what to weed out to make room for the new industry standard.

They are the lucky ones. Some will have to look not in the closet but, say, the refrigerator to ask themselves, “O.K., what do I have to lose?”
Are you afraid of being left behind?
If so, p.m. me. I will take to boxy old expensive outfits off your hands.

High armholes are back...

...but you have to give up three-button fronts, drape, wide lapels, high-rise trou, broad knees, etc., to get them.

Since when was that a fashion trend?[huh]

It's actually been quite popular in Italy for a few years now and they really pull it off with style. I'm going to try and hunt down a pic. It was in an article where they discussed wearing their watches over their cuffs too.

Those pants are TERRIBLE. The cuff length is an easy thing to change, but you can't kill the '60s stovepipe. Of course, no departure from the awful modern low-rise. Notice one model isn't even wearing socks. Never mind the fashion statement, it's bad hygene!

The jackets are at last coming around, but the lapels are still '90s chic narrow. Notice one is SB peaked. Hurrah!

The trouser length isn't too bad in the photo, not quite floods. It's rather like the way men wore them in the 1920s. I don't care for the narrow lapels or the low waist so much. Good to hear about the high arm holes though.

You have to admit, Thom Brown's hobbit look is silly and not intended as a serious comment on fashion. At least not men's fashion.
After all, guys wearing what amounts to A-Line skirts, with wedding dress trains, and stockings, are not quite our demographic.

it's basically an update on the '58-'62 continental look with the addition of the ubiquitous low rise trouser.

it's not that i object to this look. it looks good on some people. i object to articles like this that proclaim this look (or any other look) to be THE LOOK and the ONLY LOOK to have RIGHT NOW ! it's the quickest way to see highstreet shops suddenly full of the stuff leading to overkill and ruining it for the few who had it as their individual look to begin with.

Didn't you read the article, HBK?

Though you can track elements of the look to the influence of a designer — the shorter jacket and pants can be credited to Hedi Slimane and Thom Browne, the two-button stance to Tom Ford, the high armhole to Helmut Lang, the skinny lapel to Jil Sander, the flat-front pants to Romeo Gigli

Like Madonna who gave the world sex, and Brad Pitt who gave us the hat, we should really give credit where credit is due. Thank you Mr. Lang. Thank you for inventing high armholes. Thank you Mr. Gigli. Thank you for inventing a time-machine, going back to the 50s, and inventing flat-front trousers. Where would we be without such brilliant innovative minds?

Regards,
Senator Jack
