This ain't me - 'tis my grandfather, ca. 1910-12? I am thinking this the Balkan War, not WWI. Just had to share for the uni - perhaps some of our resident military experts can fill in details.

Greece - I once tried to get detailed info from my mom about her heritage, but she just said "We're Greek!"


I've seen old photos of folks from the Carpathian Mountain region, eastern Europe, etc. and they def. look like my Mom's side of the family. My Dad's side was more Northern African looking....neither side looks especially Greek (my sister and I are rarely pegged for Greeks).

One of my oldest memories was visiting Greece as a toddler - we went to my Grandfather's farm and I was totally wowed watching him eat soup with that big grey handlebar! He still kept it curled at the tips into his final years; They were hearty rural folk, lived well into their 90s.

Thanks Big Man - he was a very proud man, which I think is evident. I wish I'd had the chance to know him better. I also wish I had more detailed info on this pic. My mom is not good at that, alas.

I've had to ply her with wine at holiday dinners to loosen lips and get any family history .... I knew their home (northern coast of Crete) was occupied by the Nazis during WWII but apparently the mustachioed gent also stowed away on a boat to America for a few years (sometime before this photo was taken) for some mysterious purpose....I am guessing working on the Panama Canal, since he came right back to Greece and married my Grandmother. As evidenced by this uniform, he wasn't dodging military conscription, which woulda been my first guess at that age.

He inherited a farm from his father and probably more land/money as a dowry, but maybe digging canals was lucrative in the short term? [huh]

One possibility is that several of the companies that were building the canal promised workers they would become US citizens. When the men arrived they found out they had been lied to. Also many were not paid what they were promised or billed for food, etc. For a man with pride it would have been a bitter pill to swallow.

Interesting! It's entirely possible he wanted to come live here, then went back to Greece, took over the olive groves and settled down?

wow - just goes to show - shouldn't take anything for granted.....always feels weird on Father's Day (I was 22 when he passed).
