I think they're extremely unflattering on everyone. They remind me too much of the muumuus my mom wears. yuck!

I had a brief, but intense (read: lived in a school bus, following the Grateful Dead) hippie period in the early 90s. I lived in patchwork and quilted maxi dresses. I even sold them for a while. I might get one as a beach/pool cover-up, but I won't wear one as street wear.

Exactly what I thought as I clicked the Target link. I need sleeves, a defined waist, and a little leg to show.

Oh my god...I am glad I wasn't the only one....I didn't make dresses then, but I knotted a bunch of those hippie bracelets and necklaces. :) Everyone should have a communal hippie experience. :) But the maxi dress needs to be put to rest. I did have a nice denim one from J.Crew that I wore to pieces.

And Andrea? Picture please. :)

Maxi dresses can look good if you are very tall and very boyish and slim.

I am curvy and short. I look like I wrapped myself in a bedsheet to answer the door in a hurry if I wear a maxi dress. My inseam is like 28" and a maxi dress is pretty much a toga with aspirations of world conquest on me, and I end up with no figure at all.

Makes me sad. I wish I was tall.

I find these answers sort of interesting.
When I think of maxi dresses and hippies as I was one I think of lovely wisp of young ladies with long tresses with daisies in their hair. The look can look very pretty. Especially with a floppy straw hat even. It is coming back and it is coming back strong.
Nothing new in fashion as they say, it just comes back around.

Yeah, that is who I think of it looking good on. Tall, thin women who it drapes in a way that emphasizes her delicacy. Unfortunately, like any other look that's on trend, it isn't worn just by women who suit it, but by people to whom it is a very unkind look. And nothing makes, for example, a rather solidly-built or stocky woman look stockier and more like masonry than this look.

I'm not against maxi dresses at all. Just find one that does indeed have a defined waist. Plenty of them I've seen don't, but others do. It's a great dress to wear to the beach or on a 90+ degree day IMHO.

However it's not at ALL my normal 40s or 50s garb, that's for sure!

I don't really eschew trends just because they're trendy. [huh] If they're unflattering, then I do!

Indeed, if you look like a pre-raphaelite muse go for it. Otherwise

There are flattering styles for all body shapes. This one is not very forgiving for the majority of the population.
