Matching the pocket square to the tie

I dig it!
Is this your set BK?

Alas, no. Too rich for my money. I think this is the one "The Real Henry" purchased, or was at least thinking of purchasing.

Reviving this thread...

I have a question about pocket squares.

I'm getting married this Saturday, and will be wearing a beautiful black woolen suit from the early 1950s, a white shirt, and a navy tie with a faint swooshy pattern of fuschia and pale grey.

I'll also be sporting a boutonniere of white (I can't recall which flower we chose, but it's not a rose).

So my question is, does one wear either a boutonniere OR a pocket square? Is wearing both overdoing it? And if wearing both is not overdoing it, should the pocket square and flower be the same color? Or could they be two different (though complementary) colors?

Thanks in advance for any and input.

I know this is a slightly more formal outfit than you're going for, but this is what the men wore at the most recent wedding I was involved in (excuse my expression, I was mesing around with the six year old who took the photo....):

We had the pocket square matched to the tie (as seems to bed the norm with wedding wear these days), with the flower being in a complementary colour rather than the same. The green was matched to the Bridesmaids' dresses. The groom was wearing an ivory cravat, though his pocket square matched the rest of ours.

I think either matched or complementary can work.... depending upon the placement of the button hole on your jacket in relation to the breast pocket, you might think about complementary as that would maybe avoid too much of the one colour-block on the one side if they're close together? Ultimately, of course, the only correct answer is what you (or maybe more accurately, as it is traditionally the bride's day ;) she) think(s) looks good. Congratulations - hope the day goes well. :)

I think the "less is more" rule applies here. By that, I don't mean give up one or the other...just don't overdo either one. Hopefully the boutonniere isn't over-sized and the pocket square should not overflow or billow up excessively from the chest pocket either way. ;)

P.S. - I think the "Sydney Opera House" fold would be a good choice here and its angular design would act as a foil to the "boutie". Would someone else be kind enough to post a link to that folding tutorial that appeared here recently?

For what it's worth, Royal Couturier Hardy Amies is quoted on this as saying that nothing else matters other than 'it must look like you use it, and you must'. So from that point of view, it should just look as thought it's been stuffed in there.

As to colour, I was always told that the square should tone with the tie, but not match.

Well, the spouse nixed the pocket square (I was going to wear a white one). I also went with a different tie than the one described above -- I had Magnoli's Casablanca tie rush-shipped in time for Saturday.

But I thought some might enjoy seeing what I wore (and what my gal wore -- her dress is not vintage, though it certainly looks it, I think).

Congrats on your wedding:eusa_clap . Sorry not everyone was happy with your pocket square, but, what will be, will be.

The MTH look says "band uniform" to me. Jerekson's look reminds me of a 20s or 30s band - the light colored 3pc suits were very popular for uniforms.

Matching of tie with suit is very important , if it's not good that suit to your tie and hanky set you feel uncomfortable. if you have good sense of wearing dress then your tie look fancy.
