Great movie that I'm watching again today. I highly recommend it for any single fellas out there.Truly timeless. Definitely the inspiration for "Swingers" and it won the Best Picture Oscar in 1955!

Just find a nice girl;

Find a nice girl and settle down. Have kids. I've got a friend with a daughter, I'm sure you'll like. She can cook, clean, sew. A nice girl. That's what you need Marty.

I don't know how readily available it is, but I actually prefer the Playhouse 90 version with Rod Steiger. The scene where the girl rejects him over the phone is incredibly painful to watch.

Wow...I never even knew about this! I'll have to investigate!

Wow, I didn't know about the Playhouse 90 version, either. The phone rejection scene as played by Ernest Borgnine in the movie is pretty hard to watch as well. Great movie and largely unknown today.

I have to chime in here: the grainy kinescope of the original live production with Rod Steiger is indeed better than the film with Ernest Borgnine - not that it's not a great film on its own.

Agreed regarding what has been previously said about the original. That it was performed live contributed much to it's tension. Hard to believe that Paddy Chayefsy (sp?) went on to write ALTERED STATES.

I shoulda spelled it I dunno, whad...

Ah, that could go on and on. :)
Well, what DO you want to do tonight? Me, I'm gonna reminisce some more about the movie. You see, dogs like us, we ain't such dogs as we think we are. As I recall, this movie could be an entry into the Tear-jerker thread.
This is a movie I need to watch again, as I've only seen it exactly once.
Nice that PrettySquareGal resurrected this thread.

Another reason I prefer the Playhouse 90 version: the young Tony Soprano's mom (or Mrs. Pynchon, if you prefer) was somewhat less than... attractive. Ironically, Rod Steiger was the "catch" in that particular pairing.
