From Doctor Damage over at AAAC:

This is a great photo of Marty on the set of The Departed. Love the shoes and pants, great summer wear.

Does anyone have any ideas about the hat?

Sort of off topic but Scorsese was wearing the same outfit minus the hat when I saw him filming Goodfellas in Queens in 89-90.
T'was me eagle-eyed wife who pointed him out standing right next to us.

One of my Italian relatives used to date Martin Scorsese.

Not sure what happened to that relationship. It was maybe in the early 90's or late 80's...

I identify with Marty. He is a role model for me - the Italian-American mama's boy geek who, despite an obsessive dark side and a basket of annoying personal mannerisms, gets artistic success and even, ever so briefly, the girl (in his case Rossellini, in my case...well, let's let fate write that chapter).

I'm with Hadley...he looks good.

I actually think the gentleman looks good. As good as Andy Garcia in his movie with panama..et al...'The Lost City.'

Once again (and I know auld Paddy's record is stuck on this one!!!), he is championing a dressier look for men out there in the modern world and is showcasing JUST HOW a hat can make a man look GOOD!!

Hadley and Georgie have such stunning taste!!!

IMO, white socks are always best. It takes a gent with a command of style to rock them.
No, it's the opposite. White socks don't look good on anyone.

White socks are fine with athletic or white dress shoes and matching trousers.

But in this case, Marty's got tan pants and brown shoes...and a glaring space of white between. For that matter, it looks as if Cary in the picture above is either wearing no socks or white socks with his gray suit. Horrors!

Since white socks are essentially - these days - athetic wear, they seem out of place with more traditional clothing, and even more so when paired with unlike colors / schemes.

I'd say Marty's attire is well done, with the exception of the socks. He looks as if he dressed himself instead of a designer dressing him, and still looks classy, and nearly equally important, comfortable.

I have a pair of off-white/cream cashmere socks that I wear with light grey flannel odd trousers and brown suede shoes. [huh]

Tomasso, that sounds absolutely striking. And it's exactly what I'm talking about: beautiful, quality, white socks, and the confidence and fashion navigation to use them. A man that can rock those -- really sell it and make it their own -- is someone whose style has me captivated in the best way.

Black and brown are safe (and often very poorly utilized and interpreted), but when fashion is safe, I'm bored. Now, it takes an immense fashion/style talent to really rock white socks, but that's a brand of style that always ends up setting the trend for the rest.

Oh I see. I felt badly because I didn't realize this is in 'hats' until just now.
...I'll stop my impassioned diatribe about white socks now.
