Since I can't quit looking at this and also can't stop salivating, I'll share my misery with you. This is a picture that according to the caption is a New York hat shop displaying the 1941 line of Knox and Mallory hats. Where did I park that Delorean.....

Even worse is that is most likely an oval room, meaning there are 2 more unseen curves completely stocked with hats!
What do we suspect the other 2 curves held?
Stetson and Dobbs?

The picture is from a book titled "We Crown Them All: An Illustrated History of Danbury" by William E. Devlin. There is one 20 page chapter on hatting with lots of pics. There are also several references to hatting and the families involved throughout the book. I haven't read the whole thing yet. There are several copies on abesbooks.com currently with various prices.

Y'all chill, that is really a b&w of Garrett's hat closet and they're all 6 7/8's and 7's.

SWEET!!!! :D lol

That is an awesome photo though. I'd love to be able to look at all those for real. Christmas could come early.

It really is sad. That photo would have been a photo typical of the hat dept in major dept stores in large cities across North America in the 50's and early 60's.
I remember a small dept store named Ratliff's in Blountsville, Alabama where my aunt worked. When I was 5 or 6 years old I recall clearly stopping in with my mom to visit her and she was boxing the straws and putting out felts in a wall display that took up 12 or so feet of the wall in the men's dept. There were also two rotating standing racks with hats at each end of the display case for ties and accessories. This would have been fall of 1962 or 1963. Hats were a good part of their men's merchandise in those days.
