Yes, Macintosh were the suits of choice for Fiipinos during the 1930s. I don't know how that relationship started, but amongst that generation of Filipinos, Macintosh's are remembered fondly. I had heard this as a youngster and I always wondered what exactly a "Macintosh suit" was...I always figured it was a style of suit. It wasn't until later that I discovered it was a clothing company.

During that era, Filipino men were recruited as laborers, but because of immigration law Filipina women were not allowed to migrate. Not only that, but miscegenation laws prohibited Filipino men from courting certain women. So when it came to dating, the young Filipino men were fighting an uphill battle! The Filipino's secret weapon was the Macintosh suit, which, according to the Filipino old timers, was guaranteed to make any woman swoon!

well, better late than never. Just saw this. Not so bad to revive the thread, given the quality of the maker. I am thrilled to know that my deductive reasoning may have led to a correct conclusion.

And while we are on the subject, please enjoy some beautiful Macintosh suits, destroyed by spending 50 years in a hoarders house.

Just for fun, here is a little googling.

Their old store front, I would assume in LA area. It is now an LA beauty school. Any LA members know where this might be? Found the beauty school and did a street view, but I think it is a new location.

Seattle Local 7 Union newspaper. See add bottom right. Interesting article about corruption and gambling too.

And sure enough, Local 7 was Filipino Cannery Workers Union. Check out the sharp suits on the guys off to Alaska. Looks Like Resortes and I cracked the case. Resortes, are you Filipino? I always thought you were Mexican like me. Love the vintage Latino Scene in LA.

Interesting San Francisco Directory from 1938 that also lists occupation for some people, including a Mr. Razzini. Clerk at Macintosh. 7th listing from the top first column. Guido clk Macintosh Studio Clothes r713 San Bruno

And to think, I lived in SF 5 years, and up until two months ago, I could have gone and asked him if he had any old stock stored away and pick his brain. I'll bet he would have gotten a kick out of it. Guy lived to 94.

He started his clothing career at MacIntosh on Powell until he opened his own store, Guido Razzini Men's Apparel on Broadway in 1948 and later moved to the corner of Broadway and Columbus.

Tag from his own men's store posted on his memorium page, by someone who's father shopped exclusively with him.

Oh, another beat up suit on Etsy. Notice the pronounced darts and 6 button closure.

My grandfather on my father's side is filipino, he immigrated to Mexico instead of California from Manila.

Great sleuthing! It's funny. for being from southern california, almost all of my macintosh items are from the San Francisco location.

Neat stuff, my grandfather on my mother's side was Filipino so the MacIntosh link is pretty interesting.
