No pictures, but we're expecting a new dog soon. I always had German Shepherds as a kid, and when my last one passed a few years ago we were in the middle of some major life changes so it wasn't the right time to get another one. We agreed now that we're settled, when the right dog came along we'd get it.

Well, last week I was clearing some snow at a rental house a friend owns and the renter came out to talk with me. She just moved in, and owns her own business training protection dogs. She has a beautiful female Shepherd, I remarked how nice the dog was while we were chatting and she said it was looking for a home. It's a rescue dog that was abandoned with her, and she's nursing it back to health and doing some remedial training. I absolutely love the dog, so we talked about it and I'm supposed to bring her home in a few weeks as she finishes the training. In the mean time I go over and we've been working on the adjustment for the dog to get used to my family and the dogs we already have. So far it seems to be going well, so hopefully in a few weeks it will be a seamless transition and I can start her on cattle work in the spring.

German Shepherd. I guess because they're become so associated with Police and security work, at least in my mind. I had to do a sort of "Duh.... it's part of their name" and realize that herding is what they originally were used for. Since reading your post I've been watching YT videos on German Sheperds doing work with cattle; very smart and versatile dogs.

My Grandfather was a cattle rancher and he usually had those small short-haired Australian cattle dogs. They loved to work but weren't especially smart or friendly from what I remember.

A little funny side note. As some of you know, a couple of weeks ago, we had a bad wind storm with 100mph winds, that knocked down a lot of trees. The now funny part is, about every day I see some dog owner out for a walk trying to wrestle a stick out of their delighted K9s mouth. Truly, dog heaven!
