You mean like the time the heeler tried to take her sister's chair and I snapped this pic?

Yep, happens all the time. The only difference is the heeler is VERY strong for her size, and tends to pull the towel out of the chair. The very towel her sister is laying on, bringing her sister down with it. :D

Octavia, saying goodbye to a pet hurts so much. You did the absolute best you could do for Pumpkin, and that was to love her every day of her life with you.

The people who took care of this cat left her behind when they moved in March 2011. They had her for 3+ years and never let her inside or interacted with her other than to feed her. My neighbor and I have been feeding her and I've gained some of her trust; she lets me pet her and even purrs. I call her "Mattie" because her fur was matted so badly that it had pulled away and big patches of skin around her neck were exposed (it's grown back nicely). She's looking much better and I have to say, I've become a bit attached to her.

Great story Lily.
My wife and I have a burning hatred for people that neglect animals.
Our Bedlington was that way when we got her.
I recognized she wasn't right, but knew she had to be rescued, so we paid a substantial amount of money to "buy" her from the breeder, and took her as far away from that person as we could! 6mos and 4 infections later, she was 100%. Well not 100% but a lot better.
I'm not a cat person Lily, but I'll do anything for an animal that needs help. (cats make my eyes water LOL)

Thanks everyone for the kind words and encouragement. My boyfriend went from the admonishing words, "Don't get too attached to that cat," to these, spoken from behind the outdoor grill, "There's Mattie; see if she wants a bite of some of this chicken," as he sliced off a few pieces for me to give her. Until I can get her to a vet for shots and tests, I can't have her come in the yard with my cat, so all interaction is outside the fence.

And speaking of my cat... Macaroni - he's a cross-eyed rescue from a local shelter, and his best buddy Augie, an aussie shepherd/border collie mix, from a rescue in Northern CA. Augie and Mattie have met on walks and they like each other too.

Thank you so much for the kind words, everyone. One really doesn't realize how big of a place a pet can have in your life until that place is suddenly empty. It's easy for me to think I could have done a better job as a pet owner and prevented it somehow, but one of the hardest things is a lot of people around me don't seem to identify with my sentiments. It is a relief to see so many animal lovers who understand here. It is truly appreciated.

I feel your pain, I had to let my beloved Samantha go, she was my 16 year old Maine Coon cat and the light of my life, she had a belly full of cancer and I couldn't bear for them to cut her open for a little more time racked with discomfort.
She died in my arms, the last thing she heard was her Papa telling her how much he loved her and how blessed I was to have been her human.

I have been remiss in not introducing my friend and companion, Krieg, the American Dingo. She makes a great avatar. She will be 7 years old next week and has been with me since she was 9 weeks old. Like the name suggests, she is has an attitude.

People like that infuriate me.
Why have a pet in the first place.
Owning a pet in my opinion is a binding moral contract between a human being and the animal.
We agree to feed and care for them their entire life making them part of our family and they provide loyalty and unconditional love in return.

People who care more for their material possessions then their pet probably should not own a pet in the first place.
This agreement isn't just to care for them when they're young and cute, you have to care for them when they get old and their health starts to fail and when the time comes that their quality of life is not worth continuing it our job as pet owners to provide them with a merciful release from life's pain, to comfort them as they pass from this life to the next.

This is my cat, Mr. Scamps. He loves to sleep on my sons bed, and generally follow him everywhere he goes.

He also knows how to open the fridge and has the ability ability to consume all our ham very quickly.

Thanks for the kind words -- much appreciated right now. Feline Renal Failure claimed her after a long and brave struggle. She was a former feral cat, and as domesticated as she became, she always remembered the streets -- and was always ready to take on the enemy. This time the enemy was just too much for her.
