Still loving that website blurb though with its references to "blog queens and clueless copyist mfgs" and photos of people wearing LW jackets crouching next to the corpse of a boar they've just killed. The sale section has some fantastic, exotic items on it, I really love the golden yellow suede jean jacket and the plaid biker jacket, but the guy who writes the descriptions should really just relax and enjoy his craft, we know they're bullet-proof in quality.

I've been looking for three years for a Lost World's Suburban jacket in a 44 or 46, haven't found one yet...

So be REALLY patient, could take a decade or more to find the LW jacket you want used.

The yellow suede is very cool. I had a very similar Levi one back in the 60's.

I got tired of searching and hoping and waiting so I just took the plunge and bought a new LW A-2 in size 46 long (good luck finding one of them on eBay!). BEST fitting leather jacket I have ever owned (and I've tried them all!). Fit, quality, materials, all top notch. And the leather is simply divine!

I've considered getting one of their jackets, either a Suburban or Downtown in the past, especially since I live not far from their Queens factory, but this line drove me to Aero (amongst other factors):

"We do not have a Retail Showroom/Store facility. Our Factory is not open to the Retail public. All Sales are via this website."

When I was first looking into buying a premium jacket 5-6 years ago I called and spoke with Stu, who seemed ok to deal with - if you knew EXACTLY what you wanted. I did not know this, and needed some handholding to better understand fit, wear, break-in, care of, hides, etc. When I called Aero, they were more than willing to spend time with me to explain all of these things. I asked Stu if I could stop by for 5 minutes just to have his people measure me so there would be nothing lost in translation, but he refused.

To me, the purchase of such an expensive item needs a bit more service than LW is willing to provide. Yes, they appear to make excellent jackets, and I would certainly love to support a local businessman, but Aero's customer support and build quality reputation was enough for me. I do recommend LW, as it is obvious they do build an excellent product - but you have to have a lot of jacket experience to do so, or at least know what you want before calling them.

I got a similar treatment, he acted like he was doing me a favor just by taking the time to respond. His email replies were like three word answers, his customer service is terrible but maybe he's a small operation so he doesn't have time to hand-hold, but there's no reason for rudeness when trying to sell $1000 jackets to people. He certainly doesn't have much time or money to invest into that website that's for certain.

It's a hell of a jacket though so I would be willing to suck it up.

I've imported a few musical instruments, and a few pieces of vintage denim, all from the US. The duty and tax is based on the declared value INCLUDING shipping.

Here's a rule of thumb:

Item price $300.00

Shipping cost $50.00

Insurance cost $20.00

$370.00 equates to around £227.00 sterling.

Import duty and tax would be about £57.00.

Total cost - around £284.00.

I have a Lost Worlds Leather Peacoat.
I just received it about a month or so ago and am completely satisfied with it.
The fit was perfect, the leather was top rate and the construction was also top notch.
I would highly recommend them.

The comments about Lost Worlds both pro and con perked my interest enough for me to take a look at their website, while reading the company statements I came upon a bit that made me stop and think... and I quote "Some make Jackets in Cowhide and mislabel it Horsehide to gull the unwary, enlisting allegedly unconnected web sites and chat groups to support their deception." I've read that the guys at LW have a pull no punches reputation, but surely something was afoot for awhile for it to be included in LW website

I would imagine this was added to the website after the story broke about Aero using steerhide on horsehide orders on this message board. This market is very small there are only a handful of people that make jackets like Aero and LW, I guess it's a business tactic.

At least we we know he reads this site.

While on that mislabeling subject, I purchased an apprentice made Highwayman advertised as "very heavy steer hide" from Aero's sales page. I emailed Amanda @ Aero to validate the weight of the jacket. She replied it is one of the heaviest Highwayman in that size that she had ever encountered. I follow JL Storm's philosophy....the heavier the better. What arrived was the jacket with the blue apprentice made label and it read "cowhide." It weighed over one half of a pound LESS than my Vanson Enfield.

It was a very unimpressive hide on that jacket and I no longer have it.

I really believe part of his issues are related to his environment.

That type of behavior only flies in about 3 States in the union.

A good decade or two ago there was a jacket site (now defunct) which focused primarily on A-2's. The site heavily favored a particular brand in the UK (not Aero). Over time it became known that not all A-2's by this manufacturer were horsehide. Because the site principals had been a little snippy about the authenticity of their favored source of reproductions, this revelation that some of the jackets were made of steer, became a bigger deal than was probably warranted. After all, the manufacturer had never actually stated that ALL their A-2's were horsehide. As I vaguely recall, there was a phrase that came from the manufacturer that if horsehide had not been requested they might use steer by default. Hence was born the joke about the "hide of default." Apparently this joke has been lost to the present generation. I think this is what Stu is referring to and has nothing to do with the current inadvertent "hide of default" situation inflicted on Aero.
