Aren’t all hookless zippers like this? With the male/female metallic part extending so that the rivets go through them?

Quick google shows that you are indeed correct...
It's weird though, because i keep reading people complaining that Hookless zippers are crap, failing early, hard to zip up, need full attention, etc (at least the ones Aero uses)
I don't know if there is a difference between a Hookless branded zipper and the Whizzers, but i have not experienced any problems with Whizzers.

Great jacket. Looks Heavy! Good choice on the zippers. I had zipper failure on two LW jackets. Neither was that old or the heaviest leather. Just plain crappy zippers. They look like a cheap reproduction of a Talon. I have babied the Cheap Talon on my Test and it is still working. Finding someone to change a zipper on a 4+ LW may be challenging if not expensive. Probably save money getting the better zippers to start with.
Thats my plan/motive exactly terry, get it done right first thing, come out with the big guns

I don't know if there is a difference between a Hookless branded zipper and the Whizzers, but i have not experienced any problems with Whizzers.

Perhaps problems occur when they are starting/trying to zip up when the pin isnt fully/ correctly inserted

That’s exactly the problem. I found the hookless to be a great zipper. It took deliberate action to fasten but once seated it felt way better than the puny Talons. It’s not a zipper that you can be careless with but the Talons aren’t either. The pulls on those snap like chicken bones.

Well let me tell you the Whizzer version used on Freewheeler jackets is 100% careless, to the point where in 2 years of using it i had never even realized it was a hookless design and needed extra care.
It works just like any other zipper but feels much sturdier.
There must be something wrong with the ones Aero use...

A couple of observations. My j23 is a 46s with 23" pit to pit. My 44 Trojan is a 22.5" pit to pit.The passenger pockets on the j23 have this super soft moleskin cloth for them. I had an Aero KOTR that had the rear zips but when unzipped there were no pockets in the jacket. You just stuck your hands into the jacket leather.I have never checked on a RMC or Buco or original Bucos to see if indeed they have a pocket in them or not.

John - extremley nice, amazing J23 you have there. That is without question a lifetime investment! Best thing is it is built for you and specified to your exact requirements! I am a little suprised (as others have indicated) that lining choice did not yield an upcharge, however with the full Crown Zipper upgrade, that may be all taken care if. You should be alble to wear this with no worries, and pass it along to a family memeber if you choose to and it will last thier lifetime as well.

Clearly a "leave it in the Will" jacket here! :)

Thanks randy. I think the crown upgrade also was a big reason stuart didn't do an additional upcharge.

Same experience re. Hookless. Read a lot of horror stories about it but found the opposite to be true. If you're mindful of the zipper, there's really nothing wrong with it. It's not any fussier than any no. 5 Aero's using and not the best choice for that heavyass leather, that's something I still think but otherwise it was a good zipper.

On the contrary, for those makers whose jackets were typically considered as far more superior, especially Eastman Aero, even the Real McCoy’s, and as you guys mentioned, Lost Worlds, it’s quite common to see a broken zipper, and a lot of time these jackets are fairly young, some even in mint condition.

Some might argue its due to the thickness of leather, but Eastman and TRM rarely use thick leather, and if we take B-3 type of jacket as an example, Schott is on par with many shearling jackets from those makers in terms of thickness.

My Schoot and Cockpit B3 both used large brass Ykk zipper, those are the best zipper I ever used.




The hookless zipper on my CXL FQHH has different problem as my LW's, the hookless is tough to zip up but better construction on the zipper tape. On LW, after settling in, I feel zip up's progress is a lot smoother than my Vanson.

Oh, absolutely. Thing is, Schott is made out of a somewhat lighter and usually softer leather and in a combination with an oversized #10 for the main zipper, be it Talon or YKK, it's a guarantee the zipper will last. Aero's CXL is just too thick for those tiny no. 5's and as for the other makers using vintage NOS zippers, the decaying cotton just might be the culprit.

YKK makes a good zipper.

Leave it to Germans to do it right. All Harro jackets have the entire male end reinforced in a single piece of metal casing. No need for plastic tape, nothing. Slides in much easier, no chance of misalignment and won't ever tear.

Sheepskin is much softer, I suppose. Shearling is a very soft hide in general, I guess there's a lot less strain on the zipper.
