Los Angeles recommendations for vintage hair

Can anyone recommend a hair salon, even better a stylist who knows something about period hair cuts preferably 30s 40s hair in the LA area (west la, hollywood). Looking to spend $45-65. I have spent my fair share in the hundreds before and I never get a perfect result. Been in Los Angeles for almost 10 years and yet to find me a perfect hair stylist who knows what to do with my hair. Please if anyone can help!

After having combed through the threads on here time and again, searching, googling, etcetera, and generally doing ridiculous quantities of lurking, I'm still having trouble with the actual practical step of getting a really authentic vintage haircut.

Last summer I went to Frenchy's in Burbank because I'd seen mentions of it, most likely on here, and when making the appointment specified that I was doing vintage, not rockabilly, so they put me with the right person, and I was pleased with the haircut, which was short, to do Marsha Hunt type soft 40s styles, because I had historically bleached my hair and needed to get rid of the damaged ends. I'd already hacked some of it off myself in a fit of impatience, but that's another story. As it happened, I didn't much wear it vintage, but it pretty much looked cute no matter what I did. (Note: Frenchy's was great, I'm just being a nerd and looking for something more, for want of a better term, historically accurate.)

However, it was definitely a modern cut, cut the modern way, wet and whatnot, with definitely modern layering, and I'd really, really like to get it cut authentically. It has very unhappy split ends now, because it's been absurdly long since last it was cut, and the situation is dire. I know a lot of people just take in pictures and maybe a rockabilly haircut chart or pictures from Daniela Trudich's book, but I really have my eye on having it cut authentically, in part as an experiment to see what kind of difference it makes.

Given that LA is such a haven for vintage enthusiasts, it seems to me that there HAVE to be people around who've at least experimented with these cuts and styles, rather than modern, retro-esque things. The trouble is finding them! Also, affording them, as I am definitely not made of money.

Where do you ladies get your hair cut, around LA? Who specifically should I ask for? As far as location goes, I'm in Pasadena, but I'm willing to drive. And somehow, I suspect there are other habitual lurkers in the area with similar thoughts on finding a hairdresser.

I know there are other threads talking about finding hairstylists, but I didn't have much luck finding one that was specific to LA. I have a pretty good idea of what I want, but I don't want to have to do battle with the stylist! There have to be stylists in this area who already do this stuff - where do I find one?!

Well, this issue must be addressed then! I can't tell you how important finding the right person to cut hair is! I'm looking to do a middy as well. My hair is growing out, and much to long for my taste!!!

Not from Cali myself----but I do know there are a couple salons in Burbank that cater to this style. Also there is an adorable girl around here. RetroBabyDoll...maybe? Long blonde hair, shes from Burbank and she does hair...she might be able to help. I am going to search for the name of the salon I am thinking of and report back.

I work with a hairstylist for weddings and she also does various photo shoots and she does great cuts and knows all about vintage styles and settings. Her name is Maryah and you can see her work here http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewAlbums&friendID=230974542

She is in Redondo Beach. There are also these stylists/salons:

*Roxie Sosa - If you live in or near Los Angeles, Roxie Sosa can help you with those 40's hairstyles.
Her grandmother is a hairdresser and they do workshops in 40's hairstyles
Tel: (310) 271-8695
E-mail roxie@natif.com

*Sandra D. from Cappella Salon. She works with reVamp (http://www.revampvintage.com/hair-makeup.html on their vintage hair and makeup classes.

*Ultra Lux Salon http://ultraluxsalon.com/ and an article written about them: http://www.dailybreeze.com/ci_9380513

*Blue Velvet Salon (in the Valley) http://www.bluevelvethairsalon.com/

*Fandango Salon http://www.fandangosalon.com/about_us.html

What you will also want to do is to take a picture of how you want to be able to style your hair and ask them to cut you hair in a way that will accommodate that look. There are some pics on the first page that might be of help http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=11776

And here are some inspirations : http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=1940%27s+hair+source:life&start=21&sa=N&ndsp=21
Good luck ladies!

Thank you for the great referrals RebeccaMUA! I have gone to Sandra D before to do my hair but she charges me an arm and a leg and shes a bit far. I will try Roxie one of these days! I was desperate and got my hair cut at a neighborhood salon called The Cut. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and here is the picture of todays cut. I wanted the "u" shape. Which I thought she did very good at. You don't see it as much in the picture but here it is.

Hello Ladies...and Gents,
This is Sandra D. First Thank you Rebecca for the referral. It's been a while since I've visited the Fedora Lounge.
I saw this thread and wanted to introduce myself. I am a Hairdresser of 12 + years and I specialize in vintage hairdressing. I am priviledged to have studied classic hairdressing from a older gentleman who lived in the 40's and 50's. The art of wet setting is my passion in hair. This year I started teaching classic wet setting on a regular basis at my salon. This is my way of keeping this art alive and helping everyone look and feel fabulous and elegant. I take pride in my work and what I have to offer. For more info about what I do you may visit www.glamourembalmer.com
I look forward to meeting all that are interested in vintage and more. :)
