Hey guys and Gals, I just bought a hat and am wondering if I got a decent deal. As the title states so did the ad. My only real concern with authenticity is there is no X value on it. Well.. here are the pictures.

There was a hand written tag on the box (not pictured) "Vintage Resistal Tarrent fur felt hat $550"

Well, it's authentic, in that it's a Resistol. Are you saying you paid $550 for this hat?

Absolutely not .. I paid 140$, what I'm worried about is that too much.

$140 for that hat is about right (when it was new) If it's in really great condition (sweatband and all) then you didn't get taken to the cleaners, but it's not a steal. Hey, if you like it , it fits, and it's what you expected, you did O.K.! ;)

The hat I have is a black "velvet" finish hat, with a braided (6 rows) band. The braid is looped once on the side and the tails are knotted, one facing front, one facing back. The crown is a single pleat with a tight pinch at the top. It has a satin lining and leather band on the inside. It says Cavanagh at the top. There is a picture of their logo, and below that it says Cavanaugh Hats New York. On the sweat band it says Made exclusively for the H. & S. Pogue Co., Cincinnati (Now out of business). There is also a heavy paper label (White w/ red borders) that says $20.00/5C120/Size 7 1/4. I imagine it is either from late fifties or early sixties.

I have been wearing this hat since 1989. I wore it in my Masonic Lodge, during my terms as Worshipful Master in 1989, 90, and 91. Ever since then I have been wearing it during the late fall and winter with my black rain coat or with my black overcoat. Usually just to dressier ocassions.

Does any one know what I have?
Thanks

without pictures it is hard to say ... but sounds like you have a Cavanagh from probably the 60s or 70s I'd guess... possibly later

if there is no address before "New York" it is late 50s or later ... and the style you are describing sounds 60s or 70s

but like I said ... without a photo no way to be sure

The old adage about a picture being worth a thousand words has never been more true.

I agree with Moon, the hat you're describing sounds late 1960s to into the 1980s.
