I pushed the crown out, because it we thought that's how it was supposed to be... It had just a concave cicular bowl on top, no other creases, or things do the front/side/back... It was just all the way around smooth, like a dog's water dish on top.

I'm probably going to re-form that shape evenly and put it back. We thought perhaps it was done that way, but not original to the style.

This Fedora Lounge is the real deal! Wow, so many helpful comments & lightning quick too!

Since your daughter likes the hat so much, perhaps you could show her examples of how hat crowns are shaped (commonly known as the "crease" or "bash") to see what she likes, then shape the hat that way; it would make the hat uniquely her own. As if you hadn't already surmised, you'll receive plenty of help, advice, and suggestions from the members here if needed.

Big fan of Stetson hats, especially the Open Road and just getting into good quality fedoras. Brand new to the forum and trying to ID a hat. Any help would be much appreciated.

To me, this looks like it could be a Stetson Runabout or Temple. I'm trying to look at the profile, crow and pinch.

Looks to be on the stingy end of the spectrum with a low and tapered crown. Any chance of getting photos of the sweat, liner, size tag, and any tags that might be hiding behind the sweat?

Brim is too short and the ribbon too thin to be a temple.

If we're just guessing hats out of the Stetson line, my money is on the Lamont. 2 1/8" brim, bound edge, sage.

I’m not sure I’m getting where you’re going. Are you after a hat that looks like the one that guy in your photos is wearing or do you want the exact hat? I can follow you on the first, but I don’t understand wanting the exact same hat if you can’t tell it apart from another of a different brand.

Your photos don’t show enough to positivity determine what make and model it is. Lots of makers have very similar hats to this. Check out the hat-co public website and look through the listings of their brands. If this is a vintage hat, something similar should be easy to find and cheap as stingy brims are not all that popular and don’t bring the money that the Golden Age hats with wider brims do. You can also send your photos to a custom hatter and have them make you a duplicate.

The thing is, even if it is a Stetson, I would not be surprised if they couldn't ID it. That preblocked crown shows up in any number of hats. Maybe it's new, maybe it's old. Without seeing the liner and sweat, we can't even say it's a Stetson.

I still stand by my earlier assessment. The Lamont looks like it fits the bill with approximately the same proportions between ribbon width, crown height, and brim width.

I agree. Wether it’s the exact same hat or not, the Lamont has the same look and proportions. I also agree that the Stetson Co. (Hat-Co) would not be a good or reliable way to identify the hat even if it was one of theirs.

Hey all. I have a few Akubra fur felts and a vintage Stetson fur felt, so this isn't my first time to the rodeo--but it's summer and I'm looking for my first Panama hat. While hopefully someday soon I'll own a few Brent Black hats, I'm on a bit more of a budget right now. I certainly want a leather sweat band and can add a ribbon later if needed--however I don't believe there is a single person in Ohio that can stamp a hat. As of now I'm leaning towards Panama Hats Direct Fino grade ($155)--but would love something vintage and am open to suggestions. I might even have a friend who does leatherwork and can add a sweat band, but am unsure how that would affect sizing? I've got a 7 1/8 or 57 size noggin. Any other suggestions? Hi, can anyone help me date this Cavanaugh Edge Fedora? I've done some research on Google and eBay and still not sure of its age. I think its somewhere around the 60's or 70's. The store "Miller & Rhodes" printed in the sweatband has been closed for years so that helps date it some but I'd love to know more about it. I've attached several photos...scroll down to see them all. I paid $2 for it at a thrift store... Thanks!

I think you are right on with 60s/70s. The Hatted Professor website has a Cavanagh dating section. Great find on a stingy. I don't see a size tag. Are there any manufacture tags under the sweat?

I think it may be earlier than 60's. That sweatband bow looks older than '70's. I had the guys here check mine and we came up with around 1959. The Union label (should be under the size tag) might be another clue.

I'm not familiar with the brand, but that is a Homburg and it does have some value (though I'm not the guy to pinpoint the amount). Does it fit you? If so, you should wear it!

Great looking homburg. I’m not familiar with the brand either, but unless it’s something rare and unusually valuable, it’s value is in something to wear rather than collect. Photos of the leather sweatband markings, and any labels under the sweatband, will be useful in identifying it.

This web page is mostly about the Bardsley building in New Brunswick, but it contains a little information about the family:

"Bardsley Building is also recognized for its association with Bardsley family. The Bardsley’s operated a family-owned business that spanned five generations. The Bardsley brothers occupied this building from the time of its construction about 1881 until about 1890. The company had begun operations in 1849 and ceased operations in 1976. The Bardsley family were an important part of the fashion scene of Saint John and their hats became known all over the world. The third generation of the Bardsley’s were brothers Robert and Joseph who operated their store at this location until the Great Saint John Fire of 1877. The brothers had the present building rebuilt soon after the fire and occupied the east side of the building until about 1890. The hard or “bowler” hat became popular at the time and they manufactured these on the premises. When the business closed, they had a list of 20,000 customers with their style and size of hat on file."

Based on this, I'd think the name alone might have some historical significance to certain collectors. Or maybe not. Either way the hat appears to be in very good condition, so it most definitely should not be "tossed".

Lots of hatters can make you a hat like the one in your photo. VS, Buckaroo Hatters, Northwest Hats, etc. you can give them specs or just the photo and let them loose.
