Hello folks

Newbie on my hat journey. Got into them mainly 3 weeks ago because baseball caps just don't go with everything [emoji3]

So far I've got 2 style masters 2 camp drafts and a cattleman incoming. Also picked up a Truffaux Panama hat

Did my first bash on the cattleman maybe I need to get used to it but it seems really tall. I know the cattleman has an even larger brim so I'm getting a tad nervous.

Fit seems ok on this campdraft though

@EstherWeis has offered the most sound advice, IMO. Tighten up the pinches, maybe. Brim up, or brim down is entirely your choice, and can change with your moods or the venue of wear. Actually, EVERYTHING about your lid is YOUR choice, and can vary as you like until you find your sweet spots for all the variables.

Bottom line... RELAX, don't fret, and confidently go forth! Just having a great hat like that in the first place puts you head and shoulders above the crowd.

you could reduce the crown height by bashing it more, but, maybe you'd regret that later. You own that hat, that hat don't own you. I think brim up the crown on my campdraft looks shorter than brim down. There's various creasing threads and a 'show us how you bash' thread on the forum as well as akubra threads and a dedicated camp draft thread. When trying to search the forum it can be handy to click 'titles only' or use google by including 'fedoralounge' as a term with your searchterm in google. i started wearing hats 3 months ago, this is a great forum, enjoy.

I have to say I'm a little proud of myself for starting a thread that after only three pages includes Hank Williams' boots.

I actually do have a silverbelly Open Road (with a re-shaped crown) I got a fantastic deal on on eBay, though I've never been too confident of myself in such a wide brim. It also may look a little too western for my tastes. I've considered listing it here since I don't think I've ever worn it more than once or twice. That said, I may need to try it with the suit.

Great looking hat.
Don't worry about the height of the Akubra cattleman. It's pre bashed and I think it will be shorter than what you have going on with the campdraft.
With the stylemaster and cattleman you can get a feel for how much you like that height and style. I would not be in a rush to do anything dramatic to that hat. Being it has a thin ribbon it also looks like a lot of crown compared to something with the same height and a wider ribbon.
Only rule I try to follow when bashing my hats is the crown height. Measure the distance from the middle of your eye to the bottom of your chin. That's how tall your crown should be.

You still feel it is too high when you are wearing it?

A cattleman has a flatter front to it so you might want to see what you think when you put it on.
Also a thing to remember is that a lighter color felt usually looks a tad bigger on the head then a dark color.
A white object will always appear bigger then a dark.

It is simply as the other gentlemen have stated something that you can get used to.

I however deal with new hat wearers on a daily basis and I know why you feel that is it too high. It's a combination of color and crease. You need to find out what makes you comfortable and what not. It's a fun thing and takes a little searching here and there.

For us it's not that hard to put any hat on and comfortable in it since we all wear hats daily and feel good in them.
So to give you my professional opinion.
If you would walk in my atelier with that question I would simply do 1 thing.
Make that crown a little bit more refined in the front. It will make a world of difference and it will look better with your face shape. I guarantee you that feeling of being to high will be gone the instant you put it back on.

It's all very nice they wore it like that in the 50's, but this is 2017 and you need to feel comfortable in your purchase.

Otherwise they are bound to look awfully silly... we are not reinventing the wheel here ... that good old round wheel rolls down the road just fine

But, that being said. I deal with people wearing hats in this day and age. So I do have the knowledge of what people want today.

I saw no complaints from him on the hat pictured... he was talking about a cattleman he has and what is pictured is a Campdraft.

... and the majority of people today want exactly what we see in movies and photos from back then... whether they know it or not.

It is also the reason why people drop a thousand dollars on Whippets etc.

I challenge you to find a hat style in any modern hatters offerings that is not a style from "then"

A man who has always worn baseball caps and switches into a wide brimmed cattleman is quite the jump. I'm just doing what I would do if I had him in my atelier. My job is to make people comfortable with wearing their hats.

Thanks for the tips. A lot of it is confidence as I stated I'm used to baseball caps I wear hats out. I've slowly been starting to wear them out and I generally feel good.

The tip to pinch the campdraft a little more made a big difference. Thanks

The cattleman came in and is definitely shorter than the campdraft. My stylemaster feels so small now hahahahah
