Now I know more! :D Thanks for the info. I really can't tell the Japanese made ones from the others, TBH they all look equally great to me.
What do you think, is there a repro that's considerably better than what the Lee makes or am I right about it being as good as anything out there?
If you are really into vintage denim then there are differences. Lee supposedly changed the number 101J in or around 70s to 200. I suppose if any company wants to recreate the 50s 101J they have to reproduce as close as possible the 101 denim, the blanket and the shape (the length of "101J" similar to the Levi's type 3 grew longer and longer over the years). For example, I have a LVC 557xx which is the repro of the first Levi's trucker. That comes before the more readily available 70s longer and more V-shaped 70505.
I have both a nos 200 and a nos 200 Storm Rider from the 70s. They are nice jackets not flimsy like the current ones but they are longer than the 50s 101J and are made of 70s brighter colour denim. So I guess it depends on how obsessed one is with details.

I am a big fan of the Storm Rider and here is a thread I started last year featuring two of mine:

https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/a-tale-of-two-storm-riders.97867/

The Ciano Farmer one was a custom one-off but the Lee Japan jacket is quite special and still one of my favorites. I also have a Storm Rider from Real McCoys that I picked up last year. This jacket has a nicer silhouette and perhaps a little bit better build quality than the Lee Japan, but the blanket liner is not nearly as nice.

I wonder if this Non Stock is worth a look. For $90 it looks pretty good to me.

I always liked the Lee jackets. Here are the old and new.

No idea how old this one is.

This one is NOS and very stiff. I bought it and a smaller one about 6 years ago at the Salvation Army. This is tight on me. I think it is marked a 42.

Why aren't the images loading for me? :'(

I don't reckon Storm Riders got nearly as much love down in Aus as they did in the States. Don't seem to be many pre-80's ones on the market.

If you're ever thinking of parting with the size 42, I may be interested...

Cheers!

Wicked custom! I wasn't familiar with Ciano Farmer, so thanks for the tip off!

That Lee Japan looks pretty well perfect... Picked the perfect time to try and use a forwarding service to get that to Australia.

Got one! Stumbled across an early 70's one and the fit is perfect! Barely a fade on it too.

I'm not usually one for slim fit jackets, I'm a man of small shoudlers and a bit of a belly so they rarely suit, but holy hell this fits well. Very, very good silhouette.

The length is just right, sitting just over the belt of my Sugar Cane 1947s.

Nice pick-up! Vintage is definitely the way to go.. they're out there if you take some time to look.

Don't over look the Lee 81-LJ-(lined work coat)... makes a nice change of pace to the short denim

there are a ton of these out there too.. most about $80

Hi guys,

can you help me identify this one, the tag and the horizontal lines are throwing me off. Probably a new jacket.

Still trying to figure if the jacket above is the real deal or some modern reissue with a union made in usa tag. Does Anyone know if Lee still manufacture these jackets in the usa with the horizontal stripes lining ?

usually, there’s no size tag like this but my ressources on the subject are limited to the Heddels page.

I have a 1970s Storm Rider in NOS condition. The main tag looks similar to yours but the smaller tag with S underneath is what is throwing me off a little as it’s not common on vintage jackets afaik (it’s usually by chest size not S/M/L etc). Mine had a small white paper tag with 36 and some care instructions. It came off, otherwise the jacket is like new.

This is the main tag

The collar on mine is also as you can see is wider keeping in with 70s fashion. 60s versions aren’t as wide.

Also not sure if it helps but mine has the union label in the top left pocket
