Lookin' for a Storm Rider

Hi all,

Thought I'd ask the brains trust... I'm looking for a high quality Storm Rider repro, are there any current makers that you'd recommend?

Current front runner is the Studio d'Artisan Ranch Jacket.

Lee actually did a limited edition leather one that looks great, they come up on eBay pretty often and 2 or 3 have sold in the classifieds already.

Damn, that's sharp. Is that black corduroy on the collar too?

For the moment, I'm hunting a classic indigo denim + cord collar + blanket lining, but that black leather is ace.

It is indeed black corduroy on the collar, and it has a blanket lining.
I am 6'2" 180lb and wear a M

Lee actually still makes a great jacket. I've handled a few repros, kept the 1990's Lee. I personally think that paying for anything extra over what Lee is asking for their Storm Rider (from a good range, like the Lee Archives) is a scam but $260 something that the studio Studio D'Artisan costs seems like a good price.

This is my SR. Thick blanket, heavy denim and it fades with the best of them.

This is the one you want. 101LJ from the Archives. Alaskan Lining. Early SR's didn't have the blanket lining stitched to the bottom hem, same as on many old leather jackets, and Lee has even reproduced this feature. IMO it's the only one to get.

Anything without handwarmers (though the Iron Heart's corduroy lined ones, even with the gigantic price tag, do look good) is a potential for me.

I had the Iron Heart 101J for exactly one day. I love Iron Heart, I'll always say that buying a Levi's Type-3 is a waste of money if you can get an IH's take which is VASTLY superior but their I couldn't have their Storm Rider out of the house soon enough. Not that it was a bad jacket, nothing like that just that you know something's not right when a $25 SR I got at a thrift store seems to outperform it in every way.

Not knowing what the extra $400 went for. Don't get me wrong, it was a great jacket just that Lee also makes a really good jacket. All the Lee SR's I have seen were simply great and you can find them anywhere for under $50. Any Made in U.S.A. SR ought to be just as good as any repro.

And IH didn't fit very well. It was too long and a bit baggy.

Speaking of too long, according to that eBay seller a size medium has a back length of 27 inches...

I mean if you’re a normal length guy, 27 inches will go down way past your hips. Damn, it will touch your thighs. Not the length I’m looking for in a trucker jacket.

Definitely worth doing some additional research on it though, cause it looks pretty great otherwise. Sellers measurements might not be accurate.

I think the Lee Europe premium versions are a bit elongated compared to the originals and the arms are slimmed down.

I’ve got a Storm Rider made in US from the 70s in NOS condition and the proportions look different. It’s extremely v-shaped with roomy arms. I feel like I could qualify for Mr Olympia when I wear it

Yeah, that's gotta be it but I still don't believe it that jacket is 27" back. Storm Riders usually have roomy arms and are V-shaped but they're always short. Mine is XL and 24.5" back. I'm just reading on Japanese sites, the 101JL is 24" back and that's tops.

I always liked the Lee jackets. Here are the old and new.

No idea how old this one is.

This one is NOS and very stiff. I bought it and a smaller one about 6 years ago at the Salvation Army. This is tight on me. I think it is marked a 42.

I don't think that is one of the archive versions. That is likely a regular possibly made in China edition and a similar one costs around 20000yen in Japan.

Now I know more! Thanks for the info. I really can't tell the Japanese made ones from the others, TBH they all look equally great to me.
What do you think, is there a repro that's considerably better than what the Lee makes or am I right about it being as good as anything out there?
