Long Vintage Hair

Hello all!

I currently have long straight hair about past the breast area and all one length, It has a late 60's or medevil maiden look because its free and has been left alone for some time.

Id like to have my hair cut in a Lauren Bacall or Veronica lake type of cut because my hairs naturally straight so it will be easier to style. the problem is that I havent found a cut diagram for those styles to show to a stylist. As far as I know its different then how they cut today because it has to be evenly cut and not feathered. any suggestions on what I should tell the stylist?

where can I find one of these diagrams, and if anyone has one, could you please send it?

AuburnJane, check the Middy Thread and specifically this post by ohairas. Her long diagram is probably just what you are looking for! Scroll down to the lower part of her post to find the link.

Is something weird going on with posting link to other lounge threads? There are two links listed in this thread and none seem to be related to what is being discussed. Is this an upgrade issue? Just wondering? Has anyone seen this problem on any other threads?

Oooh, you might be right that it could be an upgrade issue...I just clicked on both the links and saw the same thing (unrelated threads, at any rate) that you did. Maybe during the upgrade the database was changed? That isn't supposed to happen, but sometimes it does.

Did you report it to the powers that be, Land-O-LakesGal?

I used to have waist-length hair; now it's just below my shoulders. A couple of ways I used to wear my hair:
1. twist all the hair from the nape of the neck UP to the crown, in a sort of faux-French twist. Secure with hair band. Then braid all the rest of the hair, and make a high braided chignon.
2. Hard to describe, but I will try. Put all of your hair into a ponytail, loosely. Then flip all the long hair UNDER the pony, and pull it through above the rubber band. Take the long pony tail that is left, and braid it (or just twist it) and secure at the nape of the neck into a low chignon. This will create a roll of sorts on the sides. I have also just twisted the hair on the front into rolls (because I had so much hair) and then put it into the ponytail holder.
3. my scanner isn't working, or I would send you a picture of this. I french braided my hair on both sides, down to long braids. Then I crossed the braids, and brought them up to the top of the crown, pinning them along the way, and tucked the ends into the hair around my ears. I put a silk rose at the nape of my neck, where the braids crossed. It really looked spectacular.

4. My aunt was a WWII Navy nurse, we have pictures of her hair in a hat. She would set the front in pincurls, so it was wavy, and then make a loose chignon at the nape of her neck.

A non-vintage but cool look from my HS days (when dinosaurs roamed the earth in the 1970s.)...a girl at school had thick, beautiful blonde hair down to the middle of her back. She would set the bottom of her hair in rag rollers at night- so when she combed it out (NOT brushed!) the hair down to her mid-back was straight/wavy, and the bottom was a complete mass of curls. I have never seen anyone's hair prettier

I've always wanted to try this-- get just the top part of my hair waved, then put the rest up in a chignon. I know in the 30s long-haired girls would have the top part finger waved or marcel-waved, but is there a simpler way one could achieve waves up top sans heat and wave clamps?
My hair's about to my waist and naturally quite straight, though I rag curl it almost every night.

...

I took that same diagram plus some photos of Lauren Bacall and Rita Hayworth to my hairdresser but she didn't really have any idea what I wanted. She gave me a layered cut with a soft U-shape. But with this cut, the curls didn't come out quite right. Psycho Sue gave me some ideas what went wrong (http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?43375-The-Middy-Thread/page19). Now that I read all the postings here including the links, I get confused again. It's being said here that all hair is supposed to have the same length (for instance, 6 inches). But in the Middy thread it was agreed upon all hair to "end at the same level" which means all hairs have different lengths.

My hair has grown a little now and I'll be ready for my hair dresser very soon. But I'm confused and don't know what to tell her. :p

Also, I'd like to ask if there is anyone speaking German who knows about the special vocabulary. I can't even translate "uniform layer cut" - all the hair styles have different names here. I have no clue what horizontal and vertical layering is and I'm not sure my hair dresser knows any better...
Hilfe! Wer spricht "Frisör-Deutsch"?

I totally know the problem. My Sis-in-law cuts and dyes my hair and she doesn´t speak english at all. What I did was the following: I brought her a bunch of photos of Lolita Haze´s unstyled hair I found at her blog http://vintagestarlet.blogspot.com/ (I couldn´t find the exact posting, sorry), some "long middy diagram" I found at the lounge and a picture of Veronica Lakes back. I told her that every layer has to have the same length (auf gut deutsch, dass alle von der Wurzel bis zur Spitze z.B. 40cm lang sind und eben nicht auf gleicher Höhe enden) and that I wanted that u-Shape like Veronica Kake. Somehow we managed it, I think.

What you could also try is going to an old-ladies-salon with older hairstylists. They should still know the classic cuts. Or you try to find a vintage hairstylist near you like Debbies 59 in Mainz.

Hi Katinka, thanks so much for your reply!
I'm in a rather small town, so it won't be easy to find a hairstylist who's able to do what I want. Plus, I'm not so anxious about experiment too much (hair does need a while to grow back..)
I guess I rather stick to my regular hair dresser, at least I'm sure she's good willing.
Anyway, I'll search the site you posted the link to, thank you again!

My hair is presently about armpit length xD so it's in between short and long. I do have layers and a fringe, but I've never had any trouble getting my hair to take a set because my hair is naturally wavy on its own, so it holds curl really well. Anyway, I'm wondering how I can best achieve a style like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mando_gal/5215826623/
which I love. For the body of the hair I'm sure it's a case of alternate-curl-direction using large sections, but what about the front? I've not yet figured out which way to roll the hair to get a small wave like that.

Any thoughts? Do you think my hair is too long for that?

I always think of Veronica Lake when it comes to long hair, the "Peekabo fringe"

I have a dilemma. My hair is almost waist-length, and I really like it, but styling it in curls (which I always have unless I'm way too tired) and even just maintaining it in general is getting to be a real pain. It takes forever to do and never looks quite right, and falls within hours. It usually looks like Betty Page without the bangs and longer. I look longingly at hair like Lauren Bacall's, and even Grace Kelly's, but I'm worried I would have regrets. If only I could have it long when straight and short when curly!
Does anyone have tips for keeping it looking shaped and smooth and not a weird mess of curls when it's this long? Or a good middle-ground length for the best of both worlds?

I'm letting my hair grow long. One day I'd like to have Brigitte Bardot's mid-fifties do: long and wavy with short layers crowning the head with curls. Looks great in an updo as well.

Cherry Lips: I'm in love with both the Brigitte and the Edwardian girls images!! So much fabulous inspiration :eusa_clap.

Penny Dreadful: We probably have about the same hair length (mine falls somewhere between my elbows and waist when straight); you probably don't want to hear this, but the weight really does suck the life out of curls after a few hours :(. Do you use a curling iron or do you set it at night? Setting it in rags or soft curlers at night when it's just about dry will make longer lasting curls than a heat treatment in the morning, in my experience.

Also, I try not to brush my curls out. The look is more Lillian Gish ringletty, but they last much longer than when I brush them out. Also, if I want soft curls in the evening, I'll leave my hair in unbrushed ringlets all day, then lightly brush them out in the evening. It seems to work wonders!

...or get a middy! I'm getting more and more tempted to just bite the bullet and get a few inches taken off myself this spring :).

I do a cold set with pillow rollers at night and only do hot rollers when it fails. I did have it cut to the bra band in a modified middy a little while ago though and it seems to be holding up quite nicely, except today for some reason :S

Where do you gals buy pillow rollers? Please let me know where I can purchase them via internet.

You can get them on Amazon, or you could make your own. I have heard of ladies taking the sponge from sponge rollers and sewing it into a little casing. They are sooo comfortable to sleep in.

My hair is pretty long as well and I am just learning to style it. I do a lot of sponge roller and hot roller sets and then brush out like crazy. Maybe a roll in the front, faux Bettie bangs, or a pomp - all with the back down in wavy curls.

My go-to style lately has been faux rolls- twisted up on the sides, pushed forward a tad and secured with combs...a la Heather Graham in Swingers. (best pic I could find)

Why didn't I think of this?? I have my set of foam rollers that just don't cut it b/c my hair is so long that no matter how tight I roll, I get dents. You'd think that with as much fabric as I have laying around, I wouldn't be such a dunce about using it for things other than sewing :eusa_doh:
