Hi y?Ǭ¥all ! Been looking around the net for a good 40s type work/dress shirt.
Need something fairly authentic looking for everyday wear to wear with my
40s wide ties or 50s bow ties. I think the key thing is the collar and it needs to be longer and pointy. I tried the 40?Ǭ¥s type dress shirt that Siegels ( Zootsuitstore.com) sell but it aint very good. The fabric is and feels cheap, the collar is pointy but very difficult to keep it in place. Anyone know of a good source for reasonably priced 40s type shirts for every day wear ? No one seems to offer them anywhere ? Thanks for your help folks !

My personal choice

I usually buy Van Heusen. I think they might have the collar type for which you are looking. They are also a golden age name in men's shirts, so that's nice.

Sincerely,

There aren't any sources at present. Really.

i was going to say the same thing.
there really isn't a modern equivelant for the pointed collar 30s-40s shirt. it's not just the length of point but the subtle curving TAPER that doesn't happen anymore. that's why chambray late 30s work shirts sell on ebay for $180.

well, well I just don?Ǭ¥t get it. Why istn?Ǭ¥t someone out there who makes a great
classic 40?Ǭ¥s style dress shirt.? Collars of today look awful specially when combined with a cool wide tie. Many years ago a shop called Skin Deep in Sydney used to make great 30?Ǭ¥s , 40?Ǭ¥s and 50?Ǭ¥s repro clothing for work and they used to offer a wide choice of work and dress shirts with the correct collar and pockets. They had a good choice of fabric, plain, striped etc. Rock a Cha in London used to offer some good shirts too, I wish I had bought more of them years ago. Rule is : you see soemthing good and authentic : buy not one or two but three ! Long live the cool style of the 40?Ǭ¥s.

Ahhh Rock-A-Cha... I still have a few Rock-A-Cha shirts, mainly the nylon ones they were doing just before they closed, but I also have a woolen check shirt and a batik print short sleeve somewhere in the house. I had an excellent white long sleeved dress shirt that finally wore out after one wash too many, and as you say, I should have bought more. Still got four of their suits (in wearable condition) as well, and my wedding suit is gathering dust in the loft - the fabric had a fine dark red broken stripe - not quite a pinstripe - running through and that stripe wore out on the thighs after I wore the suit too often to work. And they're still making fantastic suits - as I've mentioned on other threads I bought a 40's SB from them late last year.

eBay. eBay. eBay.

Below are two 1930s shirts that sold on eBay recently. Medium size.

If you don't find it anywhere else, you'll find it on eBay.

Sure, nothing like the original. However lot of stuff sold on ebay is described as "near new" but when the stuff arrives is a different story. Measurements takes are often wrong so that the item does not fit or the condition is way worse than described. Just bought a 50?Ǭ¥s chambray shirt and it is in real life 1 and half inches less in the chest than described so that I cant really wear it. You just gotta get lucky and that is why it would be great if there was a repro maker who would do reasonably priced 30?Ǭ¥s -50?Ǭ¥s style work and dress shirts.

I still find nice, pointy-collar shirts in department stores- you just need to look.
Shirts are one item of clothing where you can- if you look hard enough, find all collar styles. The shirt I wore at the London FL meeting was a dept. store shirt- pointy collar, French (plain/unpleated) placquet, french cuffs, slim fit and a 'heavier' quality of broadcloth than the usual business shirt.

Remember too that yo can lengthen the collar points by stretching them wet, if you have a collar which is 'closed' enough, with a pointed shape.

This hes been mentioned in another thred.

Skin Deep

Skin Deep is still around. Forgot all about them and their retro stuff. Will have to have a look next time I am in the city.

Here is a link to their website, and they do have a 40's pointy collar!

http://www.skindeep.com.au/home.php

Here is a shortcut to their collar styles, note the spear collar and the soft business collar. Is this what you are after?

http://www.skindeep.com.au/shirts_collar.php

Also check out their suits, there are definately some 30's and 40's suit styles there. Will see if I can dig up some information on them for you all.

http://www.skindeep.com.au/suits.php

Looks like they did the suits for the movie Hoodlum with Lawrence Fishburn, haven't seen it and don't know how good the movie or suits are but will have to check it out. Anyway while you are browsing you can see some of their stuff in the gallery section.

Cheers

I think Skin Deep must have changed since the 80?Ǭ¥s and early 90?Ǭ¥s. I remember the shop being packed with beautiful 40?Ǭ¥s and 50?Ǭ¥s repro clothing.
The guru of hep and cool John Tesoriero used to work there, a cat with an unbelievable collection of original clothing and he sure knew his stuff. Wonder where he is now ??????

Here in London I had a problem finding long collar shirts, everything was short or spread collars (and those don't look good on us "bigger boned" fellas).

I found that John Rocha has a line of 100% cotton shirts that have long, pointy collars. I think I picked up 3 of them at Debenhams. While lacking the subtle curved collar of true vintage shirts, they aren't bad and look pretty good compared to the stubby collars that are quite common over here.

Granted, it does say "John Rocha" down towards the bottom of the shirt, but this is the part tucked into my trousers so no one would see it anyhow.

Ben Sherman are currently selling a long pointy-collared, button-down Oxford shirt - at least my local Debenhams has them - but I can't find any pictures anywhere.

Here's an intersting website - The Vintage Shirt Company. According to their homepage
The Vintage Shirt Company supplies shirts for use in period costume dramas.
All the stock is adapted from original garments to ensure an authentic period look. Close attention has been paid to the detailing and standard of finish which means they can confidently be used in film work.

This is a 1920s spearpoint collar-attached shirt for ?Ǭ£68.00 + VAT in white cotton poplin:

You can see the collar more clearly in this photo of a collar clip:

So not particularly long, but soft and pointy. It looks typically British 40s to me, rather than the longer American 40s style of the SkinDeep spear collar.

They also sell collar studs, cufflinks, braces, bow-ties, hats, underwear and nightwear.
