Lock & Co. cap - just won

I really like several of the Locke & Co. hats and some of their country clothing but their prices are a bit high. I am debating whether to buy my smoking cap from Lock & Co. or from Turnbull & Asser who carry more fabrics. I couldn't pass on this hat even if the seller couldn't give a hat size. I got lucky and paid about on tenth the going rate for their tweed caps...

That's a nice one... good score.

I've never worn a cap like that. I doubt it would look great on my huge head, but I should try it sometime.

Ande, I think you would be surprised. There are a wide variety of caps that can be quite deep in the back and, like newsboys / 8 panel caps, much wider if that is your preference. I've seen some very substantial gentlemen several hat sizes larger than myself wearing some very flattering caps. Like so many other hats, its just a matter of finding the right size, colors and patterns for you. NB - I use the plural because I went from two hats to a closet full once I started learning more about hats here on the FL.

Cookie, I don't think I've seen caps selling for that much before. I know prices on Borsalino fedoras, trilbys, etc. have really gone up but who knew?

Someone here should be able to answer that for you. I've never tried to have a cap sized up or down...

By the way - love the Borsalino. I don't know what happened to my brown herringbone cap but everything I've seen recently has been too big.
I guess it's a good thing this one wasn't in my size!

I am not certain I can answer questions on quality. I've always been partial to the caps at Worth & Worth (I grew up in Manhattan), Christy's and Lock & Co., and the fabrics available through Borsalino. This however, can be attributed to my lack of exposure to other hat makers before joining the FL. JJ Hat Center (US Borsalino reps), Worth & Worth, and Lock & Co. when visiting friends in London were the only places I really knew to buy hats. My only other caps were gifts received during an upland game hunting trip to Scotland.

I've noticed that several of the caps I have been watching are going for considerably more than I was willing to pay. I can understand higher prices for a few particular brands, some selling new for prices from USD $120-$230. Especially for their vinage hats. The higher end of these prices are however for house tweeds / checks or cashmere. Harris tweed from the same makers tends to be less expensive and I would imagine Donegal should be the same. [huh]

I have noticed however, that caps are increasingly popular and are being sold in catalogs and by catalog companies like Hackett, et al. I guess we need find our resident experts to tell us more about the quality and rarity of various caps to get a better understanding.
