I travel several times a year on Missions trips and disaster relief/recovery. Most recently I was a week in the Dominican Republic. My wife and I went for our 5th wedding anniversary and to visit and support friends of mine who live there full time as Missionaries. Although internet access was available if we asked and television was available if we chose to watch it we didn't. It was the most wonderful week for many reasons. One of which was being away from tv, internet and phones for a solid week.

Last fall I was in Texas City for two weeks following Hurricane Ike. We were so focused on our jobs that I completely forgot there was a presidential election going on. I witnessed exactly what you are talking about time and again. A lot of people in that area got to know their neighbours the days following that hurricane.
Immediately following that trip I did a ten day trip to Russia to visit and work with a church we partner with. I recall some of my team frenetically trying to reach family members at home to tell them that we had arrived safely first in Amsterdam, then Moscow then Ivanovo. Using expensive world wide cellular plans or trying to access the internet to send an email. We hadn't been gone 24 hours!! I tried to gently remind them that Missions trips at one time took months just to reach the destination. That in less then two weeks we'd be back again and they could tell their family in person!!
One can argue the pro's and con's the good and bad for weeks about TV, Cable, Internet, Cell Phones etc. But I have learned this one fact.
VERY LITTLE in this world REQUIRES immediate attention.
Now please note I said "Very little" not none, some things do.
