Is it normal for the liner or sweatband to buckle at points? My hat's sweatband is buckled in to spots, and I can feel where it portrubes out a bit whenever I wear it, which causes a very slight discomfort and annoyance.

I would say it is getting dry try some lexol or other leather conditioner on it, give it a good dousing and hopefully it will relax again. Otherwise it maybe that your head is a long oval and the sides are trying to conform to your head.

The two most common causes of a "buckled sweatband are: (1) Shims which have been added to make a hat which is too large fit better; or (2) Shrinking of the felt in the crown, but the leather hasn't shrunk.

The remedy depends on how well the hat fits, as is. If it's a perfect fit, softening the leather and wearing it are the best course. The sweatband, however will never lie perfectly flat. If the hat is a bit too tight, removing any shims and/or stretching it a bit will help. Once you get the fit right, the sweatband may lie flat.

Ultimately, the sweatband will only lie flat if the crown is stretched, or if the sweatband is made smaller.

Just beware that too much leather conditioner can have adverse affects.

This is what can potentially happen to your sweat with a liberal application of Lexol.

I'm not saying it WILL happen but it could happen.

It happened to me. :(

My leather sweat bands have been buckling. I believe the rabbit felt is shrinking. Any suggestions? Should I Leah it to cure/dry on a flat round block(sizer)? I resteam hats after the initial block, so that I can give the form I want.
