I guess its just that as we get older we have the funds to pursue our passions - whether its Aero jackets or Swiss watches……but I am trying to stick with just one of each for jus now - here's my pretty Tudor Sub

Stunning. I wonder what it is in us that makes us like similar things? A high quality leather jacket, Swiss Watch, handcrafted leather shoes, custom clothing, classic motors, etc. I find myself the same way. Yet, many of my friends would be just fine with common goods found at great low prices. I, for one, am NOT of the Wal-Mart variety. I'll choose quality over quantity, every day of the week. Beautiful watch.

I wonder what it is….

I think part of it is the hunt……you want something that can't be bought off the peg in the local high street - As the song goes "I don't want to be like everybody else…"

There is a study, regarding hipsters, that addresses this very issue. Basically it states that in our incessant search to be different, we become the same, still. Pretty interesting read. I think this is an article on the study: http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...ician-who-proved-why-hipsters-all-look-alike/

Nice watches.... I'd like some nice wrist hardware but I try not to wear anything that might tempt others to turn to crime. I doubt anyone's going to take the jacket off my back but I'm pretty sure they'd take the watch off'n my wrist.

Did you really just break out the H word? What is the Lounge policy on the H word - compliment or insult? Mods please advise.

Haha..no insult intended. I sincerely hope none was taken. I'm not aware of any policies on the word, however.

None taken - but here in the Uk it has, much to my disappointment, become a term of insult - generally applied to anybody you hate.

Oh my! To the contrary, in my opinion. Generally intelligent, edgy, and style-conscious ( not bad things). My deepest apologies.

There are studies on everything these days -- the BS machine has to keep on rolling. It's a complex thing, but for me it has to do with having something that's well-made and supporting the people who have the nerve to make these articles.

In social it is absolutely an insult as well. At least myself and everyone I know use it as such. It means poseur.

That's so imprecise. Here hipsters refers to thrift-shop dressed, boutique beer drinking, pseudo-anti-capitalist, long beardy types with a penchant for looking down on the middle classes because they think their choices and innate good taste are superior. Of course, some of them are quite nice.
