A-2s have the same at the top of their zippers.

It's a cool little detail, but does it serve a purpose? Something tells me it's so obvious that I'm going to slap my forehead when I find out.

I've always wondered what the two little metal holes are at the very bottom of the zipper, along the waistline. Anyone have an idea?

Ok! This jacket is from around 1936 with the Fan style zipper pull. Beautiful work. You don't often see Wool jackets with the grommet zipper.
