Let's talk Irish Whiskey....

Hello fellow Loungers.

Do you like Irish whiskeys? If so, pull up a bar stool and let's talk.

My history with "the Irish" started with regular Jameson. Then a friend convinced me to try regular Bushmills and I made the switch. (Was a bit disheartened to learn that my beloved Bushmills was a Northern Ireland product instead of from the former Republic).

Then I came across Blackbush and I fell in love. Even though I've had Red Breast, Connemara, Paddy, Michael Collins and Feckin', I hadn't found anything that rivaled my love for Blackbush (but Bushmills Honey came kinda close). That is until a lovely Irish waitress lass in an Irish pub in lower Manhattan intro'd me to Jameson Black label.

Darn the luck if I didn't like it about as much as me beloved Blackbush.

Ok... that's an overview of my tastes in Irish whiskeys. What's your thoughts/tastes on the spirit?

I don't believe I've tried any of the others you've listed, but I have a fondness for Jameson 12 year Special Reserve.

I only sip it. But, it seems that I sip too fast.

Interestingly, I believe all the whiskeys you mention above are blends -- not that there is anything wrong with that -- but I'd recommend trying some Irish single malts. Usually I prefer Scotch, but I particularly like Tullamore Dew and Tyrconnell. For blends, I really like and would recommend Powers.

Must grab a copy of my local's whiskey list... There are about a hundred in all, some of which are more than £100 a shot, some they won't sell you at all, at least, not over the bar.

It's rumbling around in the back of my mind that Redbreast and Green Spot are the only two Irish whiskies that are pure single pot whiskies, not blended.

In any case Redbreast is a nice alternative to my usual scotch.

Bushmills certainly have a range of single malts.

I generally have a shot ( or four) of regular Jameson's each evening before bed. I have a bottle of Jameson's 12 y. o. Reserve I think that might just find its way into my pack when older son and I head to the mountains for elk next month.

Unfortunately, I'm not much for Scotch. As such, when I tried Bushmills single malt and didn't take to it. I did, however, like the wee dram of Scotch they served us at the Edradour distillery in Scotland. (They claim that's the world's smallest distillery. Only employees like 3 people.) That was good stuff, that. Anyone else been there, drunk that?

...I particularly like Tullamore Dew and Tyrconnell. For blends, I really like and would recommend Powers.

YES! I agree. I should've mentioned Tullamore and Powers. I've had them as well. When we can find it in the bars round here, my bud and I drink Tullamore. But round here, we're lucky to find anything routinely stocked beyond regular Bushmills or occasionally Blackbush. That's not to say the liquor stores don't have more selection however.

Yikes! >£100/shot! That must be some mighty fine whiskey.

That's what it's all about isn't it? What a person enjoys. It's like our local wine guru always says, "Drink what ya like and buy it when it's on sale."

Hi Hatguy1, As an Irishman I love my Whiskey and have tried all of them, blended or not. However I always come back to Bushmills 10 year old Single Malt. Yum.

Oh and please, why disheartened? Please don't bring politics or prejudices onto the forum, especially into a thread about Irish Whiskey. Whether the distillery is in the North or South it's still on the island of Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is still in situ, is it not? Former Free State not former Republic. Cheers, Mike.

Yep--a friend of mine who visited the distillery recently now only buys Edradour -- and I always enjoy my visits to his place . Mostly this week I am drinking Auchentoshan Valinch ( cask strength 57%) which goes down very nicely with a drop of water. Getting back to the Irish though-- I can never order one of my favourite brands any more due to the traumatic memories of the result of wandering into a bar with a pal and asking the rather buxom barmaid for a couple of large Redbreasts please...

Jameson's is the only Irish I buy. Most Irish isn't overboard on flavor and Jameson's is usually both inexpensive and good. If I want to spend the bigger $, I'll buy Talisker, Laphrioag, or one of the Glen's.

Redbreast is one of my favorites as well. Then again, I like the odd brands too---Tyrconnell and Connemara. :cheers1:
