I could be wrong, but I was always under the impression that the Observation Bar was a kind of 'seperate' area from the other more specialist areas (like Hats, Suits etc.) where people could talk just talk generally about topics of interest, be they vintage or modern. The other areas seem to be specifically geared towards the sharing of Golden Era knowledge, so I know that when I need vintage makeup advice can I go to the Powder Room - and that's one of the things I love most about the Lounge. But I think it's also nice to have an area where we can get to know more about eachother, and since we don't actually live in the Golden Era, that may mean discussing non-vintage things from time to time.

I don't mean this in any way to be a critique of the Bartenders, whom are all fine people... :whistling

The whole lounge. There are off topic threads everywhere. The OB being one of the largest concentrations.

I think FL as a whole is run fine with the exception of the Observation Bar. If you want specifics I would be glad to share that in the background.

I really like what you said here. This is what is inspiring this slight shift in focus in all areas of the Fedora Lounge.

Any reason why you cannot share in public?

The Observation Bar is the toughest room to moderate for the very reasons we are discussing.
I have a lot of respect for those who volunteer to moderate this room. They have much less time to enjoy the place than the rest of us.

THE Observation Bar

IMO 1st positive moderation step @ FL was NO politics, BUT some of the topics in the Observation Bar are people's "private business" that I don't want to talk about or need to know about! When the FL gets off vintage/golden era topics my interest level here FADES [huh]

Solid Citizen

PS Its Mr. Key's website he pays for it, I'm a guest,
if I don't like it I can walk, BUT would prefer to remain
a guest!

Call me "paranoid", but when someone says that is the time when I really start keeping one eye on my back... Maybe it's an overdeveloped Pavlovian response, but I've taken too many "knives in the back" to not keep a wary eye.

I'd think the sandwich thread and its ilk could be classed in "The Connoisseur", along with other "food, drinks and other fine consumables" subjects, for one example.

I don't think it was meant to lure you into incriminating yourself. I think we all want to hear everyone's opinions. Afterall, the OB thread is where no is going to put the bite on you, right?

I've seen evidence to the contrary.

I generally think it's sensible to keep the OT threads to a minimum. However, as the lounge grows its going to be harder and harder to keep order. I hope that the lounge isn't eventually shut down because of its growth, but I don't see any real way of making this place what it used to be (if indeed that's what the bartenders want).

I came for the hats, stayed for the cigars, and was really hooked when I found a few folks to talk to about old airplanes. I kinda like it the way it is. I don't have to read the fluff threads, but just remember, what's fluff to me is an exciting topic to someone else, and vice versa.

I discovered the site searching for info on vintage hats. Since then I have spiderwebbed into many topics. The Categories are great for navigation.
Everyone should be able to enjoy happily all categories of the lounge. If moderating becomes too much of a task then I agree with sticking to the Mission statement of the site and respecting the creators intent. I respect this as I am a guest. Some discussions do go on and I myself have to learn to form paragraphs condensed to one idea, smile. I have no problem with a more open category like the OB if it does not become task heavy for moderators and Bartenders. That being said I would be more than happy to stick to the fundamental purpose.

While I believe order is definitely important, I think the various sections of the Lounge are set up in such a way to allow users to discuss what it is they would like to. On the contrary from other forums I have found, even in the OT threads in the Observation Bar, members show the due respect and maturity when choosing which posts to respond to and how.

Now, I wasn't around this place in the earlier days that some of the members here are talking about, so I certainly can't do a compare and contrast, but I don't see too many issues with things being the way they are these days. The Observation Bar is great for just discussing the normal concepts of life and visiting with the online friends we have all made here. The other forums are kept in order they way they should be for discussing the various aspects of the Golden Era.

I think the Lounge functions pretty well the way it is; but that's just my two cents.

It seems to me that it's mostly non-vintage-related threads where the bartenders have to step in. Something like where your tax dollars go is more likely to generate controversy and attract pot-stirrers than, say, your favorite female jazz singers.

First off, a big thumbs up to the mods. I moderate a large Christian forum that has very strict guidelines. I know it's a difficult job. That being said, forums tends to generate relationships, especially for people who've been around for a while. Sometimes you want to talk about things with those you've gotten close to. I think it's a good idea to keep the fluff and OT talk to a minimum in the other subforums, but lighten up in the OB. The OB has always been a place to talk about OT things. Everyone has the choice to not read threads that don't interest them, but it's nice to have that choice.

I agree with that. I am new here and like the Lounge as it is but I realize this place has been here a long time, and I'm a guest.

A Pity....

Like Solid Citizen said, please bring back more of the old Fedora Lounge.

LESS IS MORE!!!

It is so hard to actually find a good informative thread anymore, laden with pictures. I love to include pictures, it takes longer but helps so much.

I got so much from the FL in the early days but my learning curve has plataued.

Oh I don't know about that.

How 'bout the posting of articles about college girls back in the 50's?

Or, Boxers vs. Briefs?

Or, dressing up to go out like in the old days?

Sound familiar? These were vintage related.

We're counting on you, all of you, to bring back the informative threads.

Go pursue your passions of the Golden Era and report back here. Share your research. That's what makes this place great.
