Let's take the PULLMAN!

Hey... I live and work in the Washington, DC area and I have been thinking about chartering the Dover Harbor for a little overnight travel with eight of my closest friends (ya'll) some where, some time... They can handle up to 24 for daytime excursions and 10 overnight. Check it out and let's put together a fantasy trip on the rails!

I see this as an EAST COAST thing... However:

This restored classic American sleeper-lounge-buffet railroad car is the only heavy weight Pullman revenue passenger car still operating in unrestricted train service on the main lines of America. The DOVER HARBOR is completely Amtrak compatible and is available for lease and charter service, mobile and stationary, at locations anywhere in the USA and parts of Canada.

I was thinking that maybe we'd charter it to go to NYC for the Fedora Lounge event in May... Or maybe a trip up to Montreal... They have a FOUR NIGHT trip from Washington to Boston planned this year and the rate is $1,700 per couple. Now I KNOW that sounds steep, but it works out to just $425 per night...

I'm in the DC area and would like to do something like this. Not so sure about the "couple" thing though. Got a wife but she doesn't really share my love of days gone by.

Does she like to eat, drink, and be merry? The sleeping arrangements are single beds in stacked berths, so you could easily "bunk" with someone else.

Have we started talking about that yet? I'm really thinking of going. I've never been to NYC (or anywhere east of Arizona) but didn't want to go without knowing anybody there, and the FL event would take care of that problem.

No official announcement yet from MK, but I think that it's "on" for the weekend of May 11-13. (This coincides with another event that MK has going on in NYC during that timeframe.)

The Charter agent tells me that it's about $8K

Unfortunately, Amtrak won't let us park the Pullman at either Penn Station or Sunnyside Yard in NYC. Perhaps we'd be better off to do a repeat of the itinerary that they've got planned for one of their own excursions (Washington to Boston) or perhaps we could make it Washington to Chicago and do the long-anticipated FL event there.
