I don't think there is a demise at all. I'll continue to wear my Rolex Submariner Date in stainless steel. Like James Bond, the watch goes from casino to combat in an instant.

Worlds largest pocket watch

My brother no longer wears a watch but uses his cell phone for time keeping. It is in a utility type pouch on his belt and he has to get it out plus open it to see the time. I just glance at my wrist.

I am tough on watches, and have had my sweat remove the outer coatings of a few like my Wegner Swiss Army watch.

I have a Bulova Diver / Chronogragh style watch as my everyday watch and a Bulova Minute Repeater for dress. Need a Hamilton Tank watch with brown leather band sometime soon.

In 1982 I bought myself a Rolex Oyster Steel. Sat on my wrist, till the day my son graduated. Then he got it. He's 19 - has a cellphone - but he wears it every day, and is so proud of it!
Myself? Would not be seen without a wristwatch. My new one is the IWC Spitfire (you guessed it) Fliegerchronograph. First edition with black dial.

Cellphones are for phonecalls and not for timekeeping, photography or anything else.

I never wear a watch for that very reason. I don't care about my time.... I hate clock-watching. I might also add that I have never been late for anything in my life....

But when I do wear one it's a child's watch with a small cat holding a bunch of flowers I'm afraid to say

I like wearing a watch for its own sake... it's almost as much jewellery to me as it is as device for keeping time. I've been using the phone recently to keep track of whether my watch is accurate as until I can find the time to leave mine in for a clean, its accuracy is suspect. (Keeps stopping, i think there's some dust got into the mechanism for the second hand as it always stick when the hand is at a certain point.

I NEVER use my cell phone to check the time...ok, ok...sometimes, but not often! I'm sentimental to my watches and find them to be a part of me as well as my personality, and my wardrobe.

And yes, even though it probably takes roughly the same amount of time to get your cell phone out of the pocket and check the time as to check the time on a pocket watch, I would still rather use the pocket watch.

Saw this in the paper yesterday, looked around the bar, and darn if it didn't seem to be true about over 50/watch, under/none.

If you have your cel phone in hand continuously, you don't need a watch, now, do you?

I enjoy all those little items deemed non-essential. Cufflink, wrist watche, ring, tie clip, collar bar, keychain, handkerchief, etc.

In the hectic world of ever changing "must haves" I find the attention to choosing and matching accessories relaxing.

Pocketwatch = Cell phone?

It's a strange observation, and may be heretical, but here goes:

Seeing a man pull his cell phone from his pocket, flip it open, check the time, and then return it to his pocket reminds me instinctively of the same ritual a man once performed with a pocket watch.

I wear one of my many Mickey Mouse watches daily, and a pocket watch with evening wear, but have often thought that if someone made a jewelry quality cell phone, and put it on a chain with a few fobs, why shouldn't it find it's way into a vest's watch pocket? Kooky?

The idea of a mobile phone on a chain doesn't seem as useful. Besides, a pocket watch will never embarrass you at the theater.

I can't stand the sensation of jewelry of any sort, wedding ring, wrist watch, whatever. Hate the sensation. I carried a quartz, round dial pocket watch for years, but it recently died. Either the new batteries weren't really new, or it really died. Haven't bothered to get it fixed. Now I am watchless, and cell phoneless! I'm free! But not really. I find I can get the time any time I want in New York, takes about half a minute to find a clock somewhere.
Scotrace, you're right about the blasted glasses! Can hardly do anything without incessantly swapping the damned things on and off my face. You young whippersnappers that build devices and design web pages with microscopic type, just you wait! You'll be ready to scream, just like me!
(End of outburst.) But as far as wrist watch is concerned, I have my father's 1940 vintage wristwatch, but I never wear it for the above reasons.

A friend of mine lives in Berlin these days - never wears a watch. The public transport is so good there that he can tell the time by it!

Another guy I know, through work, for years never wore a watch. With not depending on a timepiece, he got really good at having a feel for what time it was - some sort of internal clock. Became a bit of a party trick - rarely more than a few minutes out. Then, of course, some years ago he got a mobile with the time on it, and lost the ability....

I'm feelnig a bit lost without my wristwatch at the minute. I'm not stuck for the time - out and about I have my phone if needsbe, and I always have the time in front of me in the office (on the Windows toolbar), but I feel naked with no watch on.

Got off to work one day, forgot the watch at home. Turned the car around, got the watch on - and arrived late to a meeting.
"Aint you got a watch?"
"That's exactly the reason I am late!"

My second cel was a StarTac. About as close as they ever got. I never lost the urge to say "Beam me up" when I opened it - and sometimes did.

I feel naked without one. Been wearing one always since middle school. Right now I have a Timex, analog, steel frame, white face, leather wristband. Not super fancy, but it goes with anything.

Incidentally, I wear it on my right wrist despite being right handed. Don't know why, just always have done it that way. Would feel weird otherwise. Anyone else in that same boat?

It's ok...I am left handed and have always worn my watch on my left wrist. Tried the right side but it never felt right to me.
