Keep in mind, also, that real, proper, old-school watchmakers are harder to come by these days, and you really have to scour the phone-books to find them. I was lucky in finding one smack bang in the heart of Melbourne (that's "The Watch Gallery", 337 Lt. Collins Street, if you're wondering, Talbot. Very nice work they do, too).

Shangas, thanks for the info. Good watch guys are hard to find.

I remember stumbling across a solid gold Unicorn watch at an opp shop in Blackburn back in the late 80's.

I took it to the local jeweler, and he nearly had a heart attack. He had worked on it in 1966!

Beautiful item!

That strap looks fabulous with that crisp dial :eusa_clap

I have seen some instances where 18mm straps have been used on 16mm lugs to give the watch a heavier appearance. The straps were notched 1mm on each side.

Could be effective depending on the shape of the lugs.

Illinois Wristwatch, just arrived

Bought this at the Brimfield Antiques Fair a few weeks ago, running, but sent it back with the seller for a thorough cleaning. He married it up to an NOS (1940s?) band which I think looks lovely. Bird season starts here in two weeks, and either this or my 'teens watch previously shown will be on my wrist.
New (to me) Illinois wristwatch:

Again nothing fancy, just a Smiths Empire watch, ticking strongly and keeping good time, which is a change from the Ingersoll I got a while back. The strap didn't come with the watch, I got that last month.

I think I recall seeing the top one, it is rather lovely. Mrs. B has a preference for necklace watches as opposed to wrist or pocket.

I am very pleased to hear that the clocks section has been restored, must get along to Great Russell Street soon.

Bought this watch during our latest visit to Normandy France (June 2009) at the Military Bourse St-Mere-Eglise. My favorite watchmaker gave it an overhaul. New glass, gaskets and spring. NOS watchband from the Dead Man's Corner.

All my pocket watches:

I can't get a good picture with my camera but thats the whole set.

The one on the far left is a masonic watch a neighbor had, battery operated.
next one was a gift from a former sweetheart, fine watch but new, with my initials on it. battery operated.

Next is my only really vintage, soviet wind up pocket watch got from russian neighbors. A fine, heavy watch.

Next claddagh watch i got over in Ireland, they sell these at every gift shop over there for around 20 euros. Good watch though.

Last one i got on ebay for a penny. Its a cheap, chinese made watch but it keeps the time and is reliable- i generally use it when i know i'm going to be running around or wouldn't want to risk my better quality watches.

Rolex 1947 Bubble Back auto

Last Saturday while waiting at the Watchshop to pick up my serviced Waltham the wife fell in love. I will never understand her completely.;)
She bought this Rolex 1947 "Bubble Back" automatic. Steel case and Rose golden bezel. Original dial and crown, box and papers. Ostrich leather.
It wasn't cheap, managed to get some Euro 400 off and my repair for free.:eusa_clap

HOKEY SMOKES, ANDROID! I wear almost the SAME pocket watch, but mine's an Illinois! It's size 16 model 7, 17 jewel! The face and case is identical, with the exception that mine says "Illinois" instead of "Hamilton." Mine dates to around 1920. Ever since I got this watch, it's been my daily carry time peice. I also inherited my great grandfather's Hamilton pocket watch, which I wear on special occasions. I'd show you a pic of my Illinois, but it looks exactly identical!

It's similar to the Illinois my dad passed on to me many years ago, too, except mine doesn't have the engraving around the dial and on the--uh, the--what's that called, anyway, that little handle by the crown? :(

My other pocket watches are a Longines--I guess it would be a size 14--from my father-in-law, and a huge steel Elgin that I think also was his. Neither has worked during the time I've had 'em, but I may try to get the Longines fixed next year. Oh--and not to forget the Westclox Scottie from my childhood. :D

As to wristwatches, I've got several, but nothing really vintage--the oldest is a Hamilton military-style watch I ordered from L.L. Bean about 31 or 32 years ago.

I do like a pocket watch, especially that Illinois. Having a place to carry it, though, that's another matter--I'm searching around and may open another thread on that question.

Jeepers. I have a small insignificant watch collection. I'm very jealous of the fine time motors in this thread. Here's my only old one.

It's a Waltham. Apologies for my poor camera and the dolt behind it.
