How comes that Goat is not more popular for other jackets like a Highwayman or cafe racer?
I’m not convinced that a style like a barnstormer would suit me. I think it could look a little conservative...

I think the goat is less popular than horse/steer because it is really difficult to show wear; people here prefer a jacket that will get patina, wear and tear, marks etc. rather early.
Check the Barnstormer @Sloan1874 got at the Aero sale. Brilliant.

A D-1 from ELC sort me out cold weather wise with an RAF jumper underneath if temps really dropped. I had an Irvin type but found it too bulky & hot for my typical UK requirements.

I'd second the recommendations for the Aero Thunder Bay. It's a purpose built jacket just for just the purpose you're shopping for.

Compared to all other recommendations this one looks really short - why would it be any better than lets say a lined Highwayman or a lined Half Belt? In terms of looks I also prefer this jacket. I definitely want my belt-line to be covered, but for me the longer leather jackets always remember me of WW2 movies (since off course that's the Era they were originally worn).

Ask Aero/Thurston Bros. I think it's a hip length jacket. If you want something longer, look at the Blizzard or a Barnstormer lined in shearling.

I think the aviation jackets are fantastic looking, but they look like period costume wear, and not everyone can pull off the look.

I think it's about the same length as a Highwayman or Half Belt. I asked for an extra inch in body length so it'll be around 26 inches back length. If you take the belt off it practically is a shearling lined Highwayman, or a deconstructed Thunderbay.

No it's fixed, I meant if you ask Aero to make it without the belt. That's nice alright, I don't think Aero do detachable collars anymore for some reason, I'm happy with a fixed collar anyway, I have enough jackets with normal collars. Actually I just have enough jackets.

Thanks, so am I. I’m hoping I’ll get it soon as they seem to be moving quickly but you never know if they have enough goatskin and shearling in stock. I’ll post pictures once I get it. I asked for yellow type shearling if they have it.

Moleskin was recommended to me here as warm. I haven’t had corduroy but I’ve heard it can catch on shirts, I’d imagine moleskin would be warmer, it’s cozy in pockets anyway, and corduroy is just corduroy, I used to wear trousers made from it when I was a young’un. To be honest I can’t see either being much warmer than the other.

Moleskin is very grabby if it’s used in sleeves,,I have it it a aero halfbelt & it ruins the jacket,,Getting the jacket on and off is a complete pain,

Here’s a crazy idea that actually worked: I bought a Gibson & Barnes Civil G-1 (with the side handwarmer pockets) off eBay that was a size too big for me (super-duper low price on a jacket that was basically brand new). I had a lightweight Eddie Bauer 700 goose down jacket that was sitting in my closet so I undid the inner lining on the G-1, inserted the goose down jacket (they are very light and quite compressible), sewed it all back up and had an instant “winter” G-1 leather jacket!
It’s only slightly oversized and still relatively lightweight yet warm as any parka I ever owned! But it has the leather jacket aesthetics that we all like. This jacket has kept me toasty warm in just about any weather I’ve encountered here in the Northeast.

The quilted liner would be the best for the sleeves as it's slippery to give your shirt sleeves an easy glide in or out. A long half belt will give you some extra length, a few people have done it and it doesn't look very bulky with the shearling liner at all. You can have Johnson Leather add a removable collar if you want that.

I vote D1/B6 if you are ok with the military vibe. I may be mistaken here, but my impression was that some leathers like a CXL steer stiffen up a great deal in the cold. You will not have that problem with the thinner leathers in the military shearlings. They also tend to wear a little longer (although not long) than the thunder bay which is nice for keeping the top of the rear warmer. I trend cold and can wear my D1 with a sweather into the low 20’s which should be suffieicent for NYC . Below that you need B3/ Anj4 weight. Prob is at that temp you want something to cover your butt as well. Not to steer you away from leather but a nice peacoat is always in style.

That thing looks awesome!! Especially the fit is spot on. That’s what I like about those styles. If they fit probably the B6/D1 jackets do not look to bulky.

Yawn.... slorp... drool! Did someone mention my name? As for the OP, I own several shearling jackets (RAF Pre-war Irvin, D1, B3 and a Good Wear ANJ-4) and several shearling lined affairs (Aero Thunder Bay, Aero Barnstormer and a Pike Bros. B-10). The leather lined jackets are more versatile and can go with anything. The shearling military stuff is trickier to match for work or a night on the town. The shearling jackets are more for walking or working out of doors. In that I'm retired, I wear either whenever the mood strikes me.
