As a bassist, I wouldn’t know anything about that
The world always needs bassists, good bassists and drummers are few and far between :) my ink

I’m heavily tattooed, and honestly I forget about my tattoos most of the time. Still though, I love my ink and want more. It’s just hard blowing a bunch of money on completely unnecessary things now that I have a wife and kids, and many other expensive hobbies.

That said, I’m mildly addicted to finding great artists on Instagram. My back in still empty, gotta find the right artist (and $50k).

from illustrator point of view, tattoo is 2D art placed on ever deforming 3D lump , and on a media that is not hi definition and not in archival quality, every line will blur, every color will change or fade, the shape will change along with the growing or shrinking of the lump of flesh, and worst part, we can change clothes, we can take off accessories and wear another, we can grow or shave our beard or hair, but tattoos are there permanently and yet degrading in their clarity.

I can't see the future me, I'm not sure my taste would be eternal, so I can't commit to something I would wear until the day I die or spending lots of money to erase it. I'm too much of ctrl+Z freak to have something that can't be undone, I'm afraid I would think gee what if this part is a little bit bigger, or damn that nose looks crooked if I twist my arm like this and I'm powerless to do anything about it.

and I have my younger brother who's adding seemingly pretty "random" tattoos started with a cross, and then a yinyang, and then viking symbolism he misunderstood as trinity, and some thing else, and some koi fishes, so I don't have to ink myself to vaguely see how it would look on someone that roughly resembles myself

if the tattoo has something to do with some order or brotherhood I'm loyal to then I would accept it, maybe I can wear a cross because I'm loyal to it and it is less likely that any tattoo artist would f' ked up just a simple protestant cross, but I can just wear a cross pendant

We're all just degrading lumps of flesh... guess it got too real in here lol

not hating on the tats guys, I'm just too OCD and having too much commitment issue to have it.
if I would be in a group perhaps almamater or military or any special order that matters to me that I'm loyal to, I would have the symbol of it on my inner lower arm, where the skin is clearest and I can stare at it, and mostly more protected from wound or other skin damage

There was a time I couldn't imagine getting one...

Fantastic tattoos in this thread! I really like the ones you got, @Jon Crow.

I thought I pretty much always wanted a tattoo but could never afford it or settle down with an idea of what to get so some few years ago, I finally had an appointment made for an entire sleeve and left chest side at the best local artist & I even made a deposit for it but a week before getting it done, one morning I woke up absolutely certain that getting a tattoo is not an option.
It was such an odd feeling, how a choice that I had made, one that I was really, really looking forward to for so long, became entirely alien to me literally overnight.

I tried to ignore this feeling and then look for a reason for such a dramatic change of heart - It wasn't the pain as I had no idea if & how much it hurts and it wasn't the money as I had the deposit down which would've been wasted if I gave up - but I couldn't figure it out other than it just felt like it was someone else's idea that had literally nothing to do with me.

And that was that... I never showed up & the money is gone but there hasn't been a single moment since that I regretted my decision. I know it's so stupid as nobody would care either way and I am no better or worse for it but it's so strange...

I too am covered in tattoos. Only a couple are anything I would call actual art, the rest are just random things that popped into my head. But I also don’t regret any of them. The biggest pain is that most of them are 10+ years old now and need touch ups and color re-done and I just don’t have the time and money to keep up on all of them. Other than that I still love mine. I got my first as soon as I turned 18 and I will be 39 next month.

It’s odd because I can’t really tell you why I have them or if they do anything for me mentally. I honestly forget I have them most of the time. They just blend in and become part of who you are. I don’t consider myself an artist, I am not in a gang or been in prison haha, I am not much of a musician. I play a little guitar and I play bass but not for a living, no military. I don’t consider myself tough or cool. I don’t talk about them much or show them off. I live in some place winter is like 6 months long so they stay covered a lot. I just kind of like them. Got one, and decided hey these don’t actually hurt. I am weird and lucky and they don’t bother me at all, and just kept going.

Now jackets I can explain. I grew up being a rock n roll obsessed kid and all the coolest looking bands like the aforementioned Clash had awesome leather jackets. My favorite movie stars had them. I needed to see what all the fuss was. I also grew up extremely middle class. US definition of middle class. Meaning doing ok, but not much disposable income. So now that I am an adult I get to own some of the things I couldn’t as a kid.

Im also a history nerd. So one reason I’m here on TFL versus other places is the great respect folks here have for the history, the artisans, the businesses, and culture. Seeing people like TMitchell cataloguing so much. Or those folks who know every contract and variation of the military jackets and what year they came out. There’s a great respect here for what we obsess over. You don’t get that everywhere. There’s history groups and fashion/style groups and I feel like TFL does a fantastic job of riding the line between both.
